1988 XJ 2dr 4x4 67,xxx miles. Worth it?

New member but long time forum stalker.
Looking at a 1988 Jeep Cherokee 2 door (not limited) 4x4.
Has 67,000 original miles. Id be the second owner.
Interior is in showroom condition. Outside has clearcoat coming off.
Absolutely zero rust and it drives and rides like a dream,
Asking price was $4000 but he'll go down to $3300.
Worth it?

Id buy it just so I could take those hideous side steps off.

That aside... looks like a nice ride, Id say its worth what he is asking, especially for an XJ enthusiast.

I'd buy it in a second. All the XJs here are rusted out. There are low mileage 2001s that aren't that clean.

Why wouldn't you buy it? Thing looks like it's been babied all 67K miles. Not to mention, ONLY 67K miles on a 26 year old XJ....?......mint.

I might buy it as well, but I'd also be thinking "too few miles can be just as pain to deal with as too many." I wonder how many things may have gone dry and aged beyond safe use while that thing has been sitting all these years. Another small thought that immediately comes to mind is: when this thing HAS needed care in the past, how good of care did it receive from the type of person so cheap as to buy Gofrom tires?

There's a lot that photos never show, so I can't say that I'd actually buy it, but it does appear to be an excellent deal.

Too bad you posted your location. I already found it and bought it, got it for $2900.

Kidding.

I ran across a '99 two door with 38k on it that was in worse shape than the 150k one I bought. That one looks to be well tended though.

Well worth the price. Weather you have to fix/replace worn out parts or dry rotted parts, you'd still be working on a mint XJ with under 70,000 miles. Buy it up before someone els does...

Sitting is much worse for a vehicle than driving it, but that also depends on the circumstances. Sitting parked in a garage is a lot different than sitting under a tree out in the elements for the same amount of time. Sure some rubber components may be dry rotted from sitting, but a similar 1988 XJ would probably need a lot more money put into it from normal wear after being driven 200k or so miles. I'd rather fix a few dry rotted rubber parts than have to do extensive body work, drivetrain rebuild, bearing replacements, etc.

First of all thanks for all the feedback. Ill be picking it up this saturday. I went back and checked everything out again. All the rubber is in great condition. Underbody looks like the only dirt its seen is road dust. He has receipts for numerous fixes such as booster, master cylinder, injectors, lift gate shocks, not the best tires but are new, headlights, taillights, thermostat, and more. We took it to a shop to have a full inspection done and he couldnt find one thing wrong. No leaks, ticks, knocks, sputters, or rattles.

And yes the running boards will definitely have to go. I will keep any upgrades small and keep it very close to stock. Only thing it would see is light terrain, dry, dirt trails.
Definitley will be getting a fresh paint job first thing.

Thanks!

What'd you get it for? I saw his asking was down to $3500. BTW, Kimbrell's up in Boiling Springs is painting mine right now. I did all the disassembly though.
