winch or wench.

So why do some people call it a winch and others call it a wench? Just always gets my thinking..

Maybe they're more lazy than smart and don't bother proofreading?

Wench = A pejorative terms for a female in servitude
Winch = Device by which you spool cable in or out for the purpose of doing work

Take the wench wheeling. Time comes and the winch is needed, there be no arguing with de wench about the winch. If that dont work, like that other thread about tires on the hood, Tie the wench to the hood. at least she can spot from thee bow.

I don't understand how the two get confused, either:

"winch" can get you out of a hole.
"wench" can get you into a hole.

Both are fun in their own way.

Perhaps it's just that they graduated school untaught? (Then again, I may have higher standards for use of language, because higher standards were in place when I went to school...)

Awhile back the local newspaper ran an ad for a local 4x4/truck accessory shop that advertised Warn wenches for sale.

I have gotten so many warnings about wenches over the years for free, that doesn't sound like so great of a deal.

Big difference between a Warn winch and a worn wench. I'll take the former.

Because they just don't know.

You can beat on a good winch.
But you just can't beat being on a good wench
