what does the trail rated badge mean

Hey all. I just bought a 04 jeep wrangler sport yesterday. I still own my cherokee but I was wondering? It says it's trail rated. what all goes into trail rating it and what is the difference between that and a regular wrangler. by the way it has a dana 44 in the rear and the gearing seems kinda high which I dont mind and it has a skid plate for the TC and the transmission. if there is anything else I need to look for or I should know please tell me. thanks a lot.

It's just a badge that the Jeep marketing department came up with. It doesn't mean the Jeep has any different specs or equipment when compared to previous model years before the Trail Rated badge started appearing on Jeeps.

BTW, the skid plates are totally normal, and good job on getting the Dana 44.

Being Trail Rated is definitely better than being Mall Rated. So...there's an upside right there.

'97 moss pearl green TJ, 4.0, 5-speed, 3" Teraflex coils +1.5" spacers, Super35 w/ Superior 30 spline shafts, ARB and ZJ disc brakes, Dana30 w/ ARB, 4:10s, AA SYE w/Teraflex shaft, BDS upper/lower control arms, Rusty's HD tie-rod, JKS quicker disco's, Poison Spyder steering box skid, Riddler diff covers, 35x12.50 MTZs on Eagle alloys, Warn M8000 winch, NoLimits4X4 stinger/rad hoop, SRC rockers, Bestop tire carrier, Raingler nets, yada yada...

It's a good life. My wife doesn't look under my Jeep and I don't count her shoe boxes...

NOT all 2005 - 2008 Grand Cherokee, 2006 - 2008 Commander, or 2008 Jeep Liberty vehicles are Trail Rated

The following Grand Cherokees and Commanders are "NOT" Trail Rated:

1. All 3.7L 4-wheel drive and 2-wheel drive WK & XK's are NOT Trail Rated.

2. All 4.7L and 5.7L 2-wheel drive WK & XK's are NOT Trail Rated.

3. All WK & XK's equipped with 18" wheels are NOT trail Rated

The following Jeep Libertys are "NOT" Trail Rated:

1. All 2008 Jeep Liberty equipped with 18 inch wheels are NOT Trail Rated

If its not trail rated I guess its not a real 4x4 just all wheel drive lol

It doesn't mean anything. All Jeeps with 4 wheel drive got them starting in like 03 or 04 or something around then. Go wheel your Jeep. You're not gonna hurt it.

I got the chance this weekend to "forced upgrade" my "trail rated" front bumper. Then again perhaps the big rock wasn't part of the trail.

I like the disclaimer in the "Water Fording" section:

Do not attempt water fording unless depth is known to be less than 19 inches.

Yeah right, puhleeze!

The top and doors on this vehicle are designed only for protection against the elements. Do not rely on the top and doors to contain occupants within the vehicle or to protect against injury during an accident. Wear seatbelts at all times.
