The Wave

First, I'm new to this website, and i'm loving it already. I guess the thing I like best is that these are genuine Jeeps, and genuine people. Don't get me wrong, more power to the well-off that makes Jeeps look anything-but. However, if you're looking for community and acceptance, here is the place.

Now the subject:

The Wave. Ever since I started driving a Jeep Wrangler at 16, it took me about 2 months to get my eyes of the radio and pay attention to other Jeeps. More or less, every Jeep Wrangler I meet on the road I get The Wave, and do the same. I've noticed it's mostly Jeep Wranglers that do this.

So, is this a Georgia thing, Southern thing, National thing, or just a Jeep thing, that most wouldn't understand?

Hope I get lots of comments on this, and all are greatly appreciated.

it's a top-secret jeep thing.
funny thing is, i thought it was mostly xj drivers lol.
what's really funny though is when you forget you're driving your other non-jeep type vehicle still keep waving to those other jeeps.
well maybe you wouldn't understand yet,.. but you will.

Haha! I know what you mean, after I umm, laid my first Jeep to rest, I had to drive a crappy S-10 around for awhile. And alas, I forgot what I was driving. I think that's why I wanted to get back into a Jeep so badly, plus Jeeps are the only way to go.

Yeah, jeepers have had the wave since I first started driving in the 70's, My first jeep was a used 75 CJ-5. I was driving down the road and every CJ I met would wave, I thought whats up with this. I started waving back and have been doing it every since.

Bought my Jeep new in 2004 and it took me a little while to get used to the wave as well. Now I find myself LOOKING for Jeeps when I am out. If I pull into a parking lot and see a Wrangler I always try to park next to it as well. The wave is a great thing and most people get it.....most.

If I was a computer geek, I would develop a camera sensor thingie that would scan the road ahead for a few different Jeep grill configs. When it spotted one it would automatically employ a fake hand on the dash to wave. It would then record response and categorize results. Maybe it could even emit a sound (brown note if you will) that would cause the unresponsive violater to crap his draws. Would you buy one?

It is alive, yet dying. I believe dealers used to explain the wave to new Jeepers, but that tradition is slowing disappearing.

I wave. I even wave when in my DD (mazda miata), I get weird looks then!

It's somewhat international, actually; many of us over here wave too! Some of the lady drivers don't get it though... It's funny how some days I won't see any other Jeeps (CJ, YJ, TJ and JK) and on other days there'll be three at the same intersection at the same time.

It's definitely a Jeep thing that others don't understand. The first couple of times strangers waved at me, I didn't get it, but that's not to say I didn't love the fellowship that I had with complete strangers just b/c we both drive Jeeps. It's funny when my friends are riding with me and see me do it. I explain it, then they ask "why don't (insert un-exciting car here) drivers wave at each other?"

Definition:

The Jeep Wave: An honor bestowed upon those drivers with the superior intelligence, taste, class, and discomfort tolerance to own the ultimate vehicle - the Jeep. Generally consists of vigorous side-to-side motion of one or both hands, but may be modified to suit circumstances and locally accepted etiquette. Examples of commonly accepted modifications:
Top off: One handed wave above windshield or outside body tub
Top off during blizzard: Shiver and nod, hands may remain frozen to steering wheel
Southern/rural locations: Raise fingers from steering wheel, nod
It's not what you buy, it's what you build and what you do with it.
In keeping with this cardinal rule of Jeeping, categories have been established to account for each part of the equation.
These categories are:

The Jeep Waving Hierarchy: Based on the vehicle itself. Takes into account the nostalgia factor, the discomfort tolerance quotient, and the amount of owner dedication required to maintain the steed.
The Modifying Sub-categories: Based on what you do with your Jeep.
Equipment Adjustments: What you build.

Jeepin' Wave Rules

These rules are an attempt to make it easier to facilitate the mandatory wave when coming in contact with another vehicle of the Jeep nature. Though there are several variations of the waving rules, the following were designed as an easy to remember guideline for when to wave and who should wave first.

Rule 1:
If you are a driver or passenger in a Jeep vehicle, and you come in contact with another occupied Jeep vehicle you should wave. If the vehicle is not occupied, the wave is optional.

Rule 2:
Be the first to wave. Don't wait, just wave.

Rule 3:
Be forgiving. Sometimes the occupants of the Jeep receiving the wave are not paying attention, distracted, or are paying attention to driving. We all know how you can get lost in the euphoria of driving a Jeep and forget about the outside world.

Rule 4:
Wave vigourously. When cruising at 55mph towards a vehicle going 55mph it is sometimes difficult to see the 'over the steering wheel' wave. Get that hand out and make it seen!

Rule 5:
When you are the recipient of a wave, return the wave.

Rule 6:
Sometimes Jeep owners forget they are not in their Jeep and wave by habit. When occupants of non-Jeep vehicles wave, returning the wave is optional, but usually a good idea.
