went to camp yesterday and it got pretty dirty. Loaded up the dog a buck some dish soap and a pail and drove across the streat to Lake Superior and proceded to drive out about 30 yards and park and wash the jeep. Pretty senic spot to wash a vehicle. Should have been smart enough to bring a cammera along it would have made for some nice pictures. Dog sure like car washes like that. Hes a choc. lab and just loves the water. the raptor bed liner and wet okle seat covers make it nice too. A guy can just pitch buckets of water in it to rinse it out.

sounds like a great idea and good fun and you took the dog and great...
but do you have ANY idea what dish soap just rinsed off into that environment does?
soap hurts fish. period.

Washing your Jeep in salt water over time will also remove excess metal! Less weight means more mpg
and camo, top gear is my favorite show, kudos

Yup. To the OP, I bet you didn't know and that is cool. We all make mistakes.
This reminds me of when I got into camping a few years ago. I set up camp in this awesome spot next to a waterfall. I showered in that water with bar soap, brushed my teeth and spit in the water, peed in the water, washed out my leftovers from cooking etc.. A few weeks later I got a book on camping and they had a trail lightly section. I didn't know how bad my actions were, but now I know.
So take a look at that link and hopefully you can share the knowledge with someone else down the road.

You can go to REI and buy all sorts of eco-friendly soaps and such.

Im not to politically correct so really dont give a damm. Take a look at lake superior one time and youd see that me and a 1000 people washing there jeep everyday isnt going to hurt a thing. There isnt a boat on the water for 10 minutes that isnt causing more polution to that lake then i did. As a matter of fact you probably did more damage to the enviroment the last time you went to the store in your jeep then i did washing my truck. Maybe next time you should take your bike or walk!!!

This is the problem though you think it is no big deal because other things are doing worse. Everything compounds you washing your jeep in the lake some guy out there with a leaking outboard or some company dumping untreated water back into the lake it is all a component to a ruined lake. You are just as guilty of doing damage to the lake as a plant dumping into the lake. Just because what your doing isn't as bad as what someone else is doing doesn't mean that it is okay to do it.
One thing you probably didn't think of is that there is oil and gunk that you probably didn't think of on your vehicle and one litre of motor oil pollutes a 1,000,000L of water. http://www.ics.trieste.it/SPORE/Environmental.aspx (Look at the 3rd paragraph for what oil does in waterways)
Thats fine that you made a mistake and did some environmental damage through ignorance. However now several people have told you this is a bad thing so just don't do it again you know better now. For future reference the only place you should wash you car is at a car wash. Here is why cause it is the only place you can do it that the water is pumped into the water treatment plant and all of the gunk and crap that comes off is disposed of through proper treatment or a land fill. Even in the driveway is bad cause the water just goes into the storm sewer which will be pumped straight into the closest waterway.
