Haven't had a problem in the last 4 years here in So Cal and have driven up to Northern California many times without issue. My tires stick out 2-3 inches past the fender. I think the law says you need complete coverage, but its just not something they enforce in my experience.

Normally, it's just something they add on if you get pulled over for being an idiot. California has bigger problems than Jeepers...

Im a picture whore, so there are lots of pictures of my coverage in my gallery if you want to look.

No worries. Just don't turn me in..

It's really up to the Law Enforcement guy that's looking at your Jeep. Do you normally get harassed when you get pulled over in your town? If not, run with it. If they are anal, make sure you are in compliance.

All the Cops I know are pretty cool. (My next door neighbor is a County Sheriff and loves my Jeep.) Ask one in your town before you do it. If he says its "Not within the law but something you shouldn't be stopped for" or "Its ok", remember his name and use it in the event you do get stopped.

"I talked to Officer Jim and he said I was OK." goes a long way.

Most cops are Jeep/outdoor/gun/mechanic type guys too...

In CA, your tread can't legally stick out past your fender flares.

I wish we were that lucky up here, they have laws on the books about tires sticking out and they inforce it big time, they have whole inspection crews that now go out on "cruise nights" and pull over and tow vehicles that dont meet certain requirements.

I think it's the rear fenders they are more worried about, at least that's the way it seems to me. I ran with MCE flattie fenders up front which leave a lot of tire exposed and I never had any problems. I see an awful lot of Jeeps running around with front tube fenders here in California so it must not be too big of a problem.

Just don't be doing anything else you don't want to be pulled over for since if the police suspected you of anything, they could use the tube fenders as an excuse if they were looking for a reason to pull you over.

Hey. M tires are easily 2-3 inches out from my tube fenders and I haven't had any grief yet here in Nor Cal.

I read somewhere that having mudflaps WITH the tubes on the road will make them okay, but I'm not sure if that's true or not.

Washington is the same way, but I went three years with no flares at all which left about 4-5" of tire sticking out. Made several cross-state trips and was never hassled. It's technically illegal but a low-priority enforcement.

My tires stick out about 2 inches and I have not been pulled over yet either. The other day a Cop followed me for about 10 miles after pulling out quickly behind me.

It is one of those things they dont enforce unless you send a rock through thier window or are a jerk to them when they pull you over for something.

From what I've read you need to either have your tires covered by the fenders or need mudflaps. It doesn't seem cops really enforce it though. With all the lifted diesels in so cal they would spend all day writing fix it tickets. I'm sure if you go flareless up front but leave the back flares you should be fine and won't need mud flaps
