Are these good times?

Okay, so fellow JF member YJake recently lost 5th gear on his '91 AX-5 & asked me to help him fix it. I told him to purchase the 5th gear clip & retainer clamp kit, and then head on down (2 hours south) to my house for a quick "in-Jeep" 5th gear repair. We even had some extra time built in to take detailed pics & do a YJ Tech Forum write-up. Sounds good so far, huh?

So we got right on it early Friday morning (I took a vacation day from work that I needed to burn) and pulled the skid plate, transfer case, and then split the AX-5 case apart & started removing the rear housing. No problems, all was going according to plan!

Until the rear housing came off.........

It already had the retainer clamp kit installed previously, and 5th gear and it's counter gear were both shredded in seriously UGLY fashion!

Now we were scrambling! What to do? What to do? I put in some calls to all my local sources, and got back nada, nothing. Finally I got hold of another of my JF member/friends, Jerry JeepsOLot at his work, and found out that he still had an AX-5 (that he previously told me about & I forgot) from a 2WD XJ at his house. It had been sitting outside for a year & was full of water, but would could rob it for parts, and it was ours for the asking.

There was a slight problem though. Jerry works almost an hour away (even farther south) from me, and then lives another hour farther (south again!) away!

What did Jerry do? He got off work at 3:30 & drove home, loaded the tranny by himself & then headed almost 2 hours north to my house, without eating dinner.

My wife, JF member skynyrdchick had fed us a delicious lunch (homemade stromboli!) earlier, and was now preparing dinner for me, YJake and Jerry JeepsOLot while we diasassembled the original 4WD AX-5 from the Jeep. Finally, we called it quits and my wife made a place for the guys to crash, and we all got some shut eye so we could start fresh this morning.

I had to work later on Saturday (4:00 to midnight) so we finished stripping the old gears/syncros/bearing from the 4WD AX-5 output shaft and split open the 2WD AX-5 this morning. It was like Christmas! The inside of that 2WD AX-5 looked like brand new!

We got all the good 2WD gears/syncros/bearings all swapped over to the 4WD output, input, & counter shafts today before I left for work. YJake and Jerry JeepsOLot headed down to Jerry's place in Boca Raton to feed/water/walk his dogs, and then they'll be headed back to my place for another sleepover & early morning Jeep work day on Sunday.

All we have left to do is get the shafts back on the intermediate plate, install the shift rails, and assemble the housing, then the tranny rebuild will be done!

Then it's back in the Jeep, install the T-case & skid, and we'll be all wrapped up!

YJake lucked out in a few ways. We found out that his front driveshaft U-joints were both shot, so we replaced them. He got a FREE AX-5 donor in awesome condition, and to top it all off the 2WD AX-5 was setup for an external slave cylinder!

My neighbors must've thought we were hosting a Jeep rally! We had our 3 Jeeps (mine & my wife's YJs & our WJ) YJake and Jerry JeepsOLot's 2 YJs too! We had so many tools & parts strewn across my driveway that 2 old guys in a pickup truck stopped & asked us if we were having a garage sale!

All-in-all, it's been a busy, tough weekend. But through the help of good friends, and the patience & understanding of my wife (not forgetting all the good food & hospitality!) taking care of all of us during this train wreck of a "simple" repair gone wrong, we should have it all wrapped up by tomorrow afternoon!

So are these really "good times"? You betcha! What other hobby has people that are so dedicated & helpful, that they would gladly sacrifice their time & effort to help out another like-minded soul? I think that this kind of thing happens a lot more in our community than it does elsewhere, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Thanks everybody!

Max

Great story about camaraderie and spirit Max! FYI, I am putting in an application for a job in WPB Monday, due to the nature of my work it takes a while to get hired, but I have my fingers crossed. Look forward to getting down there again. Glad to see you are doing well!

Nah. I've said it before, I'm just a big dumb redneck that likes to help out whenever I can.

I hear MosinMe might have another surprise coming soon.
Really? That would be really nice! I hate trying to keep secrets though!

Sorry Jake, I don't know you. I did it on the recommendation of Max, so thank him.
Either way, glad everyone is happy and things are going to turn out well.

Now if Max will just stop calling me a TJ snob.
