I have bought a number of vehicles using a personal check. Each time I took the title with me and they kept the vehicle until the check cleared. I would never let someone take my vehicle until the money was in my bank.

The first sign its a bad deal in the making is when they start pressing you for a quick deal with checks. Better to have your jeep and no cash than no jeep and no cash.
Another thing is you could meet them at their bank. Most all of them will have a notary for anything that needs notarized, and you can get a check directly from the bank out of their account. When I bought mine last year, I just withdrew on a bank check, but one of my relatives said they met the buyer at a bank and had the bank issue the check right in front of them so they knew it was good, and had the BoS and Title notarized on the spot.
