Security on soft tops

Why do they not factory build a box type securable compartment in the wrangler jeep behind & below the rear seats as an optional extra. Something rigid and solid with an opening on top that locks up when you lock the car but that you can completely remove if need be.. Semi valuables could be kept for short periods on trips where you need to leave the vehicle. Also it could double as a cool box on AIRCON system when ness.

Annoying for soft top trips. Always lugging bits around.

Ron.

Sorry, I should intro myself. Ron is the name. I'm just about to purchase a W Jeep as a second vehicle. I have a larger 4x4 but in exec style not a real off roader. It's rough terrain around where my lot live & the jeep poses fun yet durability outdoors. I'm torn & frustrated at what to buy. Diesel, Petrol? Want power but not uness.. Manual, Auto? Again autos are in but do they suffice on this model or are they sluggish or non-user friendly off road? Hardtop, Soft? Or do I just hit out at LandRover defender for uk retro workhorse? I rented the jeep, it was fun, adequate for our off road usage but security was a mare. So was space? Though a trailer would sort the space issue if required. Is there a h top version that once removed becomes a great soft top or is this imposs or technically another pain to go between the two?

Thx for any advice?
Ron

Welcome Ron. You probably don't realize it, but you're posting in the Admin forum. You should probably fill in your Jeep profile, so admin can move this to the appropriate forum. You'll get more responses that way.

The problem is that behind and below the rear seats is where the gas tank is.

You can get dealer-installed locking trunks, or a number of aftermarket versions too. Either cases that sit in the bottom of your trunk, or a lid that comes up to the top of the tub and is secure once you close the tailgate.

Check out Tuffy for a more secure place to keep stuff. I have a Tuffy locker in my Jeep and it's one the best purchases I've made.

Hi Ron, and Welcome!

Ummm... where are you posting from? Are you an Aussi, a Kiwi, or something in that part of the world? Just asking cuz if you are looking to purchase a diesel Wrangler, you ain't buying in the U.S.A.

As for secure cargo storage while using a soft top, a few different things have been offered by Jeep over the years, from under-seat boxes to rear lids that fit between the rear seat and tailgate. There are also a few different types of aftermarket under-seat and behind-the-seat boxes that can be purchased. Tuffy is an excellent brand to look at, and their products are first rate. Many of us have come up with our own secure storage ideas, and made them ourselves.

Do a search for "cargo", "storage", and "security", or various other words in the thread title, and you'll see a lot of things come up.

Again... Welcome!
