Rant about soft tops

Ok, so, first off, I love Jeeps, including my own, however the soft tops are just the worst. I absolutely dread either taking down or putting up the soft top. It is one of the biggest PITA!

Literally every time I take the top up or down, I end up cutting myself somewhere on my hand, breaking a sweat and end up using every profane word in the English language.

I can get the top fully down in about ten min. Fully up takes up to 30! This will be the last time, however. I am going to be seriously looking for a hard top.

Anyone else feels the same about the soft top, or am I just being a whiny *****.

Dang, I've been doing tops on all 3 of my JEEPS for 32 years and don't seem to have half your problems. 5 minutes off and on tops. Hmm wonder what's up with yours.

Try swearing in Spanish next time might work better.

Try it on a yj or cj. Much worse.

Im guessing he has an aftermarket top... my Rampage OEM style is a PAIN to put up and zip the windows in... and its only a year or two old. My dads 99 TJ has the FACTORY top, and it goes up and down so nicely, as do the windows.

I don't ever recall taking 30 minutes. My old TJ was about 5 up or down. My 93 with OME top or the Bestop Supertop was about 10 up or down. My 76 CJ5 with a Bestop Tiger top was about 5 down, 10 up. My current 95 YJ with the Supertopper is about 10 up and down, and that is with taking time to roll it up nice to put away.

My factory top was only about 3 down, 5 up until the zippers started getting messed up.

That's interesting. I believe that it's the original top. Not sure as I'm not the original owner. I live near Seattle, so it's never really warm out. That might have something to do with it.

Nothing is ever sloppy or loose, that's for sure. Once the top is up, everything fits snug and tight. But seriously, it is a chore.

Gloves will prevent cuts. I have had an OEM top and a now have a Rampage top. No issues here. The only time it took me 30 minutes was when I was drunk and trying put the top back up in a rainstorm, I wasn't thinking clearly!

My SuperTop takes less than 4 minutes to take off, and less than 10 to put back on- by myself, that's removing and re-installing the cage.

Try it on a 4 door with a spidershade installed. Putting the top down is not bad, or putting it up with 2 people but by yourself it is a royal PITA.

yeah 30 minutes seems extremely long, even with bad zippers and one person maybe 3 minutes up or down including windows etc

I don't have windows or doors, so it only takes me about a minute or so to raise or lower it.

Half an hour seems ludicrous to me.

I can take off and put on my hardtop twice in that amount of time
