If I were to leave my Jeep with the keys in the ignition, you would probably find my corpse somewhere nearby.

Congrats on pulling him out... but I'd be really hesitant to leave it on the road with the keys in it after you pulled it out...

Whoever has the cop friend, have them run the plate and notify the owner before it gets stolen.

I'd never leave a Jeep alone in the woods, at least not for more then a couple of hours.

With the owner not coming back for it yet, it almost sounds like a joy ride and when they got stuck they just abandoned it. Maybe having the plates run and contacting the owner isn't a bad idea.

It would suck if it was stolen and they ditched it. Now your prints are all over it

Now granted the pictures may be deceiving me but it looks like a fairly large pit there even after you had pulled the front of the Jeep out of that rut.

What would have happened if during this recovery you had ended up rolling the Jeep? I commend you for helping this random stranger (who is still unknown) out but I probably would have left a note and my number saying to call me if he wanted someone to help out instead of doing it on my own.

I agree about finding my corpse nearby if my keys were left in my ignition haha. My doors don't lock but you will never find me leaving my keys in the ignition even if I was stuck.

If it's still there in a week I would drive it home...

I know there's kind of a weird line on what you should do if you find a stuck Jeep down some trail. I remember reading a thread about some poor guy who got his ZJ, long arm suspension, 35's, all that good stuff stuck down a trail. The next morning it was missing it's tires. He came back the next day with a trailer, and it was overturned with the axles removed and set on fire.

So there's no way to be sure it's safe, because it isn't. I would have taken the keys out and left a note and my number. They can still unbolt stuff from the Jeep, but if some deadbeat's walking down that trail he won't be able to steal it.

You're right, that thing isn't stuck at all. Since the keys were left inside and the battery was dead, they probably just left with the radio on or something on the way out.

What happens is people will steal a Jeep or anything really, wheel it until it get stuck, usually burn it, and then leave.

If it's not gone in the next couple days I suggest driving it home or calling the cops to impound the Jeep, before it's destroyed or chopped up. Keep in mind it could be reported stolen, and that there are some really trashy off road guys that would steal another guy's rig, so if you're pulled over in it they're going to think you stole it.

Good Luck.
