The Other Wave

I've had the JK for 3.5 months now, just a scootch over 13,000 miles on it.
Counting company cars, it's about my 85th vehicle...

But this has never happened. Sure, I've had "enthusiast-class" vehicles --- 3 Mini Coopers, a 280-Z, Torino 500, and 9 motorcycles --- we always waved to each other.
Yada yada yada; I'm used to it. I even wave to cows when I pass them now.

But this is different.

At 4-way stops, people are waving me through and watching the Jeep go by.
I'm getting to the stop after other drivers; I'm even starting to approach slower to give them the opportunity to go first.
But they sit there and look at the Jeep. It's cool but sorta creepy...

Does this happen to other owners? My Sahara is pretty stock-looking from the outside. I mean, it's not ugly but it's not a show-rig or anything...
Does everyone (secretly or otherwise) wish they had a Jeep or something?
Like Walter Mitty...

Yes, they do. I don't even wave at Cherokee (Liberty) owners, because I don't want to make them envy me even more... jk

maybe not everybody, but it seems that most do.I've had people walk up to me in parking lots and start asking questions, some tell me about the jeep they wished they had never sold, others are interested cuse they are thinking of buying one.

I know what you mean I get it all the time. "Hey man that's a good lookin jeep, I had a CJ-7 once." Then comes "What year is yours?", "What all have you done to it?", and "I wish I still had my jeep, I'm thinking of getting another one." When they ask me what year it is and I tell them 2006 they get this suprised look on their face. I guess they think it's a CJ because of the markers in the grill and the flat fenders or if it just looks old and beat up.
Either way it's still cool to get compliments on your work.

I have had a few old guys(the kind that might not want to be driving anymore old guys) talk to me at lights telling me about the fun they had driving jeeps in the war, and how they saved their butts. I love to hear those stories. When my dad was alive he would never talk about Vietnam.

Again, on the way to work this morning --- a little bottle-neck in a repaving area so we all slow down to a crawl. Two workers on the side of the road, shootin' the she-ite and not noticing anything, stopped talking as I rolled past and just stared at the Jeep.

I had no idea. I thought I was the only one that always wanted one.

Haha, I know exactly what you mean. I just washed and waxed mine a few days ago, so it's real nice and shiny right now. I was filling up at the gas station and this guy who just got out of a new Mercedes E Class starts talking to me. "Those new Wranglers look pretty sharp with big tires on them. I have to get myself one of those." "New?" I asked, "This Jeep is 12 years old with over 130,000 miles on it." His jaw just about dropped to the floor and the conversation went from there. Great stuff. That about made my day right there.

Wranglers are timeless. Good for you and your ambassador skills.

people love jeeps, what can you say. I get a whole bunch of stares at people. I also like when the doors are off and the top is down, with your leg getting that A/C (guys would know what I'm talking about) and people dang near break there necks staring. The only time I stare that hard at a Jeep is when a girl is driving a lifted one.

I pulled up at a traffic light and a Jeepgirl had her left foot propped that way --- skirt, no undies. She caught me looking, smiled, waved, and motored away.

There are miracles every day.
