here are the most recent pics of my injury. these were taken this morning - Day 8 -

my accident has reinforced my belief that First Aid/ CPR training are a must for anybody who feels that they would be capable of providing assistance if needed. i am First Aid/ CPR trained and there were other people on the New Years Day run who were capable of providing emergency care and did so with confidence.

i'm looking forward to getting out wheeling again soon and i have a " gut feeling " that i will be more aware of the potential dangers.

The fact is, having too much gap there can actually help direct trees and other debris into the fenderwall if they happen to end up pointing in that direction.
The tree generated no force of its own. The tire transferred force to the tree. If the tire transferred the same amount of force to a smaller tree (possibly dubious), but hit a smaller area of metal the puncture in the metal would be more likely. There would be more force on a smaller area.

According to buckling principals, a ratio of about 10:1 (length to cross section) would make a strong "short" column of timber unlikely to buckle and ultimately break. A 3 inch by 30 inch stick could have easily done this, and will fit through most stock Jeeps in this manner.

Look here under timber columns
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckling

IMHO a tire's ability to grab and feed something has nothing to do with its position on the Jeep. If the edge of a lugged tire grabs something and feeds an object, then it is going to feed it wherever the edge of the tire is. I think you simply see a big hole with a big tree in it. Since you know that hole was created by the owner when he changed the offset you now blame him.

My counter argument is that there is always a space between the tire and coil spring that lines up with the foot well on the vehicle. You will have to show some pretty compelling evidence allowing a bigger space there will be likely to cause a different size object to penetrate the foot well before you have any sort of point.

I'd be willing to continue the conversation about the negative aspects of various offsets in another thread if you wish. I learn everyday so maybe you will enlighten me. However, since you decided to start this in a thread about some one that is hurt, in an accusatory way, I will not continue the conversation here.
