My JK tow less than a Mini Cooper

Hi. I own a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 2011. For the summer vacations I was thinking buying a popup trailer camper for the family, not a big one, just a small popup trailer.

But, you know what, my JK can't tow a small popup trailer, it can't even tow a cow, and more than that, it tow less than a Mini Cooper.

Why?

When I bought my jeep it didn't came with the tow package, so I just asked the dealer to install a hitch and wiring and that was fine. The thing I wish somebody could have told me is that I was missing something else from the tow package, a 3.73 axle ratio, leaving me with the stock 3.21 axle ratio.

The result;

My owner manual says that a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 2011 with the stock 3.21 axle ratio can tow a maximum of 1000lbs. This is just ridiculous. An icon of power and freedom like a jeep tow less than any small car on the market.

I asked dealers about it and everyone seems to be amazed by my discovery, like I'm the only one with this problem. Upgrading my gears to 3.73 would cost me about 3k$. Or I could ignore all this and put myself in danger/waiving my warranty/insurances?

Now I'm thinking about buying that mini cooper to go camping this summer.

welcome to the forum -- I have a JK 3.21 gears I tow a trailer with a 900lb sand buggy on it just fine

I have attention defiiiii hey is that a rabbit?

Not to be a prick man, but how much research did you do before you bought it? I bought my 2013 JKU (w/ 3.73's) with the intention of towing a small boat (~2000lbs) and I spent hours combing through manuals, jeep.com, and forum sites like this just make sure I knew what I was getting into. The jeep isn't really built to tow, it's got a pretty short wheelbase so it can offroad.
That said I'd imagine that you can tow 1500 lbs or so and not have any real issues, just know that the motor/ tranny is gonna be working hard.

When I bought my wrangler I wasn't thinking about campers or boats. I just wanted a hitch to be ready when I would need to tow something.

To be honest I never tought that towing capacity would be a problem with my wrangler, I see lot of small cars et old rusty cars pulling small campers. Can't believe I can't do this!

A. You could do more research ahead of time.
B. You could pay for the regear.
C. You could buy the mini copper.
D. You can just blame it on everyone else!

It is absolutely not my intention to blame it on everyone else, neither buy a mini cooper ;-)

I just want to know if other people in my situation go overweight or regear.

I'd recommend the regear and not towing beyond the jeeps restrictions. If you plan on running bigger tires or lifting it then make sure you gear it with that in mind also!

Nope nope I'm gonna have to suggest the jato rocket route as that will look much cooler going by

So tell me again, how big of a trailer do you want to tow anyway? Besides, I would not be looking to tow more than half the curb weight of the vehicle anyway!

But I would like to see the Jado Rocket idea!

A small popup trailer camper, something about 1500lbs plus gear.

I'll definitely check for the rocket idea later this year!

Re-gear and be legal for up to 3500#. You need to do a little research to understand the relationships between GVWR, available payload, tongue weight, gear, people, and so on.

You could buy a 4 cylinder Wrangler with a stick shift, they're rated for up to 2000lbs

Braking is the same, steering same. Now with those 3.21's if you keep the trans out of 6 gear or OD going up hills you should still have power to tow 3,500 lbs.

My 05 TJU with 6 cyl and 3.42's rated to tow 3,500.
