just started getting bad gas milage

I have a 1997 jeep wrangler that just started getting horrible gas mileage for no apparent reason. The gas gage is very weird so I'm thinking it may be that. Sometimes when I get gas, $20 will get me half a tank but sometimes at the same gas station it will only get 1/4 tank. The other thing that makes me think this is that only $30 yesterday filled it completely. Lastly I used to be able to drive 35+ miles without the gage appearing to move but yesterday just going to the store took over 1/4 tank! Any thoughts on this?

You can't just partially fill your tank and judge gas mileage by that. The fuel gauge on TJ's is notoriously inaccurate, so the best way to calculate mileage is by filling up the tank and resetting the trip odometer. Drive around until it's low on gas then fill up the tank again. Look at your trip odometer, and divide the number of miles driven (could be anywhere from 180-250 mi., YMMV) by the amount of gallons it took to fill up the tank.

Damn how big is your gas tank? I have a 19 gallon tank. $20 at almost $5 a gallon will barely buy me a 1/4 tank. Depending on how you Jeep is set up you are probably getting 10 mpg. If it is idling high then 8 mpg.
