Jeeps that are Retired and Neglected
I'm not sure how many people here are familiar with a web site called www.carsinbarns.com
Its a sad site to visit and see some of the vintage and classic muscle cars that can't be bought for whatever reason so therefore they are left to the elements, time and mother nature to reclaim. Usually these were cars that were rusty or just tired but still very restoreable and yet the owners will not sell them so that they can be better cared for and enjoyed by a new owner. ![]() In the last few days, I've seen a few old Jeeps on the forum that closely fit the same description and wondered how many other Jeeps of yesteryear are sitting abandoned to the ravages of time and neglect. Their owner's no longer care or can be found. Its a sad way to go isn't it? ![]() If you have any pics of what I describe, post them here so that they may be memorialized for the joys and service that they once provided.

That is truly a sad thing. I like to think that if i ever owned a car like some of those and something happened that would prevent me from ever driving again I would either give it to my kids to use or if they do not want it i would sell to a younger guy to enjoy as much as i did. I do not believe that a car should be garage kept and never used hidden from all to see. Auto were made to be enjoyed and used not to go to waste just sitting somewhere. And to better my point I used to own a 1968 Dodge Charge and loved it so. Well to many tickets, to high of insurance cost, and parents said it was time for the car to go. My parents gave me a choice i sell it or they do. So I placed the add and turned down 47 buyers until i found the right one. I was offered from $8k to $24k for it but turned them all down. In the end it sold to an 82yr old grandfather and his grandson for $2500. After talking to them for about 5hrs god the stores me and the grandfather had
He wanted his grandson to have the chance to enjoy a true American made muscle car but do to hard times they did not have that kind of money, but after talking to the grandfather and grandson i truly think the charger was going to a good home and would be enjoyed by yet another generation that would never have had the chance if everyone just kept their cars locked away in some garage. I still talk to the grandson his grandfather has since passed on to a better place. So the moral is i was not only able to help a nice grandfather pass on a love for cars on to his grandson, but also know that the car is still be driven to this day by the grandson,s son.![]()

I did about the same thing... had a 1965 Ford Custom 500 that I bought before I joined the Corps. After I got back from my 2nd tour in Iraq, my grandfather and I did some work on it. Pulled out the 240ci straight six, and put in a 351, backed by a C-6 instead of the C-4. Overhauled the gauges, floor shifter... Eventually, owning 3 cars and paying insurance on them got to be too much and I sold it to a kid in high school that just wanted a cool car for $1200.

Seems that this is off to a slow start so I'll post a couple of pics that I found on the web.
Without a doubt, there were happier times in their past. ![]() ![]() ![]()

im 24 and since I was around 6, I remember seeing a cj5 sitting in a guys driveway rotting to pieces still with a soft top and soft doors on it. I always wanted that Jeep, it was white. Still hasn't moved, and is the color of rust now. Sad how people let their vehicles waste away

I would LOVE to get hold of the green one. Every day I pass a farm on the way home that has 2 vintage Chrysler's from the 50's just sitting there rusting away.

Ok I'll play. This is a terrible picture but it's the only one I have, from my garbage man days. You can see the Dodge Charger behind the dumpster, but beyond that is an early CJ (2a, I think). This was about 3 years ago but I'm sure both of these are still in this barn. There was a trashed late 70s CJ7 in there too, but it disappeared about 6 months before I took this pic.

I know they're just inanimate objects, but I don't know about any of you guys, but seeing these great classics in such bad shape knowing that there aren't very many of any of them left and they're just rotting away literally makes me sad.

I call these people "car rotters"
For whatever reason, they will let a vehicle sit and rust down in their yard/barn, whatever. Their answer if you try to buy it is often "im going to restore it." And two years later its still sitting in the same place with only more rust. Sometimes the answer is "it was my late husbands/son killed in vietnam" Like someone else said, if I knew i didndt have the time or money to fix it back, Id rather sell it to someone that would take care of it. But some people will hang onto them like crazy. Id love to know how many classic cars have rusted beyond repair in peoples yard because of this mentality. |

Dont't think of it as a funeral.Funeral = Dead I tried to be careful not to post any pics of jeeps that "died" in crashes or other unfortunate circumstances. I only wanted pics that were of Retired and Neglected Jeeps. Not wrecked and dead. As such, I tried to only post pix where the owners no longer cared. ![]() Understand? ![]()
