The PO had "EMPATHY" - I couldn't get rid of them fast enough.

There's a report out, titled "Dust-to-Dust" about the total energy a vehicle required, from designing it, to mining the raw materials to the fuel required to haul it around, to melting it back into those raw materials. Turns out that due to the complexity, the fact that they are generally driven FAR less then other, interstate-capable vehicles, the fact that they use far more disposable, toxic components, and the fact that they quickly become obsolete (read: no scrap value), hybrid vehicles actually rank very poorly in terms of energy conservation.
The highest-ranked vehicle? Jeep Wrangler.

That's in interesting report. The only one I could find was from '06, but it still had the Wrangler within the top 5 at approx $.70/mile with the Prius at $2.88/mile and the Maybach at $15.83/mile. I didn't read the whole thing, just a summary CNW had.
Separately, strictly based on the title, I was reminded of documentary about the Baja 1000 that came out in 2005 called "Dust to Glory." I've watched it probably a dozen times and never tire of it (probably b/c its the closest I'll ever come to participating in it). I think a lot of you guys would find it interesting.

The Dust-to-Dust guys mentioned that as hybrid and EV technology matures, their ratings will improve quite a bit. Wranglers are doing so well because the design hasn't changed all that much since the 40's, and we've got a huge aftermarket and scrap industry - we pick apart the carcasses of our junked vehicles, while a first-generation hybrid basically rots in the sun.
Jeep could capitalize on its current position, though... DC motors have massive low-end torque. An electric-drive hybrid based on the Wrangler could kick *** off-road. It would likely suck about as bad as any other hybrid on road, but as a community, we tend to tolerate problems with on-road performance much more than other groups. Plus, being the newest incarnation of the Wrangler, the JK guys could join us in hating on it.
