Jeep Wrangler LJ Rubicon V8 vs JKU 3.8 V6

Here's the deal..

I'm beginning to wonder if I should trade my '05 LJ in for a jku but I'm still hesitant because of how gutless the 3.8 v6 is. The JK I'm looking at is an auto and appears to have a 3 or 4 inch lift with 35's and I doubt its been regeared. My LJ on the other hand has 4.10's, since its the rubicon, a 4 inch lift with 33's, and a 5.2 V8 powering it which has proved to be plenty of power. How disappointed do you guys think I would be if I went ahead with trading it in? And I mean in every way that you can compare the two jeeps.

And yes I'm aware that you can't really compare a V8 to a V6.

the jk needs 5.13s with 35s and that 42le auto. you cant compare the two really is a joke. to even get close to v8 power you need to look at 12+ jks. the auto is MUCH better and has a rather low first gear and less OD. so 35s you only need 4.1. Rubi only stock and its a option on the autos. since 3.73 turns 32 well enough. so if looking at 12+ Rubis auto find one with 4.1 checked as a option. you wont have to gear it to run 35s.

I wan't to know why you would even consider getting rid of an LJ Rubi with a 5.2... Sounds like the perfect Jeep. If you want to haul the kids around easier get a second vehicle. You will never get that one back.
panathinaikos55 and xxdabroxx like this.

88 YJ with a 4.6l stroker, AX-15, NP231, 2.5" lift, 4.10's and 33's
2000 Red XJ w/ 350k+, AW4, NP231, Locked Rear, HD Crown Leafs, trimmed to fit 33's, soon to be a donor
2000 Silver XJ, Drivetrain from the Red XJ, Stiffened, IRO leafs, RE coils, custom 3 link, WJ knuckles, 35's <=== In the works

Agreed. Let me know the trade in value they offer, I'm sure I'd buy it for that!

They wouldn't even give me a offer. They said it would cost to much money to put the I6 back in it to make it sellable lol. Of all dealerships it was a jeep one. They clearly have no idea about the market of an LJ Rubicon with a V8

Yeahh you're certainly right about never getting another LJ back like this and I don't ever want to do a motor swap again with how much trouble they bring.

I had one dealership tell me they would have to put the I6 back in it to make the jeep sellable again so they wouldn't even offer me a price lol. And of all dealerships it was Jeep. The guys there are clueless in every way.

After putting this post up I really don't think I can sell it- I think my temptation was driven by the time it took to work out the bugs in order for the dodge pcm to communicate with the jeep correctly. Years from now this jeep will be even more of an eye turner with how few were made.

The Pentastar V6 is way more powerful than the pre 2012 model V6 engines. I'm not a fan of the JK's car-like features, but they ride way better and have more power than a stock TJ. Yours isn't stock though.

I'm running the 44re out of the Dakota in came from. Shifts much better than the 42re in my opinion and it's beefier if I'm not mistaken

Nah, that ain't it. You can't compare an LJ to a JK. LJ's are badass. You can get a JK anywhere. You see them everywhere. LJ's not so much. You'll miss it. I guarantee it. Keep that thing.

You'll probably run into some codes such as P0622 or P0455. If that's the case and you have other related codes they could be false. Mine is telling me those codes despite having a new battery/alternator but it's because the alternator is from an early '99 Dakota and the pcm is from an '03 ram. Your jeep is really gonna move though. I had a tranny shop mechanic drive mine with me to look it over for last inspection and had my front driver wheel about a foot and a half off the ground when he decided to turn from a stop and jump on it.
