Insurance to cover after-market modifications

We all know how much money we dump into Jeeps after they come off the lot -- bumpers, winch, lift, gears, driveline, etc. What has been your experience with getting insurance companies to cover the after-market modifications you've made to your Jeep? Does your insurance cover that? Would the payout on theft or totalling of the vehicle cover your additions? Is it a hassle to get it covered? Did you have to get a special addition to the policy? Is there a limit to how much is covered (how much)? Did you have to provide receipts/documentation about your additions (and if so, what)?

I'm shopping for insurance, and over the years, I plan to add a lot to my Jeep, so I want to pick an insurance company who's "friendly" to that kind of thing.

State Farm has been nice to us. They basically said my comprehensive covers it and just wanted me to have receipts for the bolt on stuff.

Geico told me to make them aware of permanent changes(lift) and keep receipts for everything else. My premium stayed the same after I did my lifts.

Progressive's regular collision and comprehensive policies cover up to $1000 of custom equipment. You can add a $5000 custom equipment rider if you like(which I did) for a total of $6000 of coverage. It's ~$300 per year in my case.

Side note: Progressive does not differentiate between on-road and off-road when it comes to collision, comprehensive, or liability claims. I am covered on all types of terrain.

I am not aware of any that do differentiate between on and off road. If someone knows of a company please post it.

I think it was Allstate, but I can't be certain. I know it wasn't Farmers or State Farm but I remember when I was shopping around one of the bigger companies basically excluded any offroad mishap except fire. I asked them "So if I roll it, It would be best if it were to burn as well?" They didn't like that statement.

Geico told me I am only covered on road. Any offroad problems are on me, including towing.

This is what State Farm told me as well. One guy on her says that State Farm told him to get bent - I advised him to check again.

My State Farm agent also told me to give him pictures of the upgrades and what I paid if I don't have a reciept. He keeps it in my file. This is for when you buy the part from an individual without going through a retail store.
Then it is covered. But he has to have knowledge of the part ahead of time in the case of an accident.
He also said I have the same coverage on or off road. What do you thing the tow bill word be to tow it to a garage from offroad, Most the time can't even get a tow truck there. The thing he said was not covered is racing. So I don't race while offroading.

Invite him to the forum. Since he is one of us, he might have some good information.
