Homebrew speaker pods

This weekend I built some speaker pods for the yj. What do you think? They are for 6 1/2" sony explode speakers. I bedliner coated the outside with the plasticoat stuff from walmart for durability. They are very shallow, I wanted to keep the headroom while accessing the rear seat. They sound pretty descent though, and the speakers new off of Craigslist were only $15.00. The last picture shows the room above the pod, that is a AA battery in the pic on top of it. It is pushing the top up a little bit but you get the idea.

Nice idea. I thought about same idea but going all the way across.

Any droop with the zip ties?

What is the material you used for the enclosures?

I used some 1/2" sanded plywood that I had lying around. I was considering doing a bar all the way across but I saw one one here and it just looked to massive. I don't get any droop. The plywood top is larger than the actual enclosure. The first picture shows it pretty well. That extra plywood sets on top of the rollbar and supports the encosure, the ties are just to keep it stationary. I thought about using velcro on top of the roll bar and on the underside of the lip on the speaker pod to hold it, but I didn't know how well the glue would hold up to being in the heat of the sun and the cold of the winter. Good luck and post some pics of your bar when you get it done.

They look nice. And I agree with you, I've seen some fugly homemade speaker bars! 1 question for ya. Does the softop at highway speeds flap against the bolt and nut? If it does you could always use silicone to cover any sharp edges.

No flapping of the soft top on the speaker pods. They work great.

Good idea and nice job, I have been thinking about building one that goes all the way across for some larger speakers then I currently have and with some better interior lighting. My idea was with fiberglass but I dont know how difficult it would be. It would make a good winter project though.

that is a really great setup! Glad to see more people using their noggin.
I've been having some trouble with two 6x9's in mine and have been looking for ideas were to put them.
what is the angle on the inside of the rollbar, if I may ask.

I am not sure. I started with a piece of cardboard and traced the roll bar corner until it fit well. I didn't get that technical.
