Not trying to get into big debate about it, but I have to agree with the post above that says basically to respect mom's wishes. He's a teenaged (ie - inexperienced) driver and will make mistakes on the road.

And, yes, I take my teenage kids with me in my heep with the doors and top off. And I've also taken them flying with me in those "dangerous little airplanes". Both of those involved long "discussions" with their mother.
Actually the glass shattered as soon as the jeep hit the pavement and I got some in my eye.... The only difference is that instead of my side thumping against the door on impact I would have thumped against the pavement. My arms and legs remained inside the ride the entire time

Im not gonna get into an argument over this...I was just sharing my experience. The door was ripped from my jeep in a matter of seconds, might have been different with the nuts on the bottom of the hinge pins.

I dont think that my JK doors offer any more protection than my TJ or YJ doors. I have had the drivers door stripped to a shell a couple times replacing the junk latches. They are not built much differently than the older doors. The same issue of being ripped off remains without the hinge nuts in place.

I completely agree that he should respect his parents wishes (and be damn thankful that they bought him a 2010 wrangler!!!) While my first jeep was purchased for me it was 6 years old and cost less than 5k!

I would just heed your mothers wishes. Like mentioned before they are her kids. The doors do offer some protection. Anything that is heavier than air and is compressible will reduce the force that the oncoming car has on your passenger by absorbing some the oncoming car's inertia thus reducing force (See Newton's Laws). This is why new cars have crumple zones.

This being said Jeep doors aren't the best line of defense. JK side impact tests made the door actually open upon impact.

I don't know about JK doors but doors on a YJ are just the difference between coming into direct or indirect contact with the bumper of the car that is T-boning you. They're just a wimpy cross-member between plastic and sheet metal. I think it's just there to keep the door from warping myself... haha.

I have a 5 year old and I want the "jeep experience" of the no top and doors, however I put his safety ahead of what I want and so for the I am getting tub doors and netting for the back (excited because it was shipped out yesterday). My thoughts are tub doors look pretty sweet and the netting will look nice too and people dont have to know it's for safety i like the looks.

And if the tub doors and netting don't get you anywhere then do as your mom says.

I worked an accident involving a car and a jeep a couple years ago. The car ran a red light and t-boned the Jeep at approximately 45 mph. The jeep was lifted, no doors, no top, and all passengers in the jeep were wearing seatbelts. The driver of the car was not restrained. The car impacted the jeep on the driver side. The driver of the car was ejected through the windshield, into the jeep, and struck the driver of the jeep, along with all the shrapnel from the car and jeep. The driver of the jeep suffered critical injuries, the driver of the car was killed. The passangers of the jeep were also injured from the windshield and crap from the car that flew into the jeep.

Even after seeing all that, I still ride without my doors and top. It's just a risk I am willing to take. I honestly believe that even if the jeep would've had the doors and even the soft top on, that the driver of the car still would've ended up in the jeep. Just my opinion. Do as your mom says, and when the girls are old enough and out on their own, then they can take that responsibility and risk on themselves.
