Dang shift linkage...

Jeep "Wave" customer service gets a:

A+ for arranging a prompt tow.

B- for failing to secure a loaner from the dealership, but a promise to reimburse me for a rental.

What irks me is they haven't looked at it yet (granted they've only had it 24 hours) and they won't be looking at it until at least Monday.

All because something came loose or broke in the shift linkage.

Grrr.

Anyone else ever have any manual trans shift linkage problems on a JK/JKU or was this freak occurrence?

I'm assuming the latter?

Garage
most common is the low range shift cable has two places that are plastic and well know to fail. Though my jkr has not had that and i use low range about as much as high. Never heard of the 6 speed shift issue other than the POG that a few had from the boot being to stiff if i recall. good luck

Does it even have a shift linkage for the transmission? I thought rwd vehicles with manuals just had the stick go right into the top of the transmission? That is how both my Jeep and rwd car is.

Good point, can't say as I've not got a service manual and didn't attempt to pull the console apart. But whatever the shifter attaches to has pivoted or shifted position. If that's directly into the top of the housing I may be without it longer for sure.

The Jeep manual trans shifter is mounted directly on and into the transmission. What problem was the shifter exhibiting?

It felt/looked like the whole shifter assembly shifted down and to the left. It became so the shifter physically contacted the corner of the console before it could get into second gear, and therefore prevented me from doing so.

So it sounds like the trans may have to come out and get opened up unless there's something in the top of the housing that could cause this.

Day 5 update

1. Dealer still hasn't looked at it.
2. Dealer still hasn't had a loaner returned to provide me.
3. Jeep Wave CSR did NOT call as promised to see I'd gotten a loaner and reimburse me for a rental (which I've far not opted to get, but might change my mind soon).

Not happy.

Day 7

Thanks Jeep Wave CSR & Kevin from Jeep Cares.

Getting a loaner today.

Diagnosis is bad synchro (I guess that allowed the shifter to travel too far and still not engage the gear).

Box has to come out and get opened up for the repair.

Just got a call from the dealership, they're changing their story. Not a problem with the synchro, but a bad shifter linkage bushing in the top of the transmission.

That sounds more like what I thought i felt happening, that the shifter was basically out of position.

They say the box still has to come out to replace it, but the whole thing doesn't need to be torn down.

Could have it back by late tomorrow. We'll see.

I'm guessing what they told me last week was a guess and they didn't know for sure until they dropped the trans today.

So final verdict new shift assembly and it feels like a new transmission from that perspective.

Hindsight being 20/20 I suspect something was wrong with the shifter from day one cause it never felt this tight.

FCA handled it very well.

Dealer uh not so much, 12 freaking days, seven without a loaner, and once I got the loaner (a Dart) it was filthy a stunk so bad of cigarettes I had to clean it 3 times before I'd put the kids in it.

So happy to have my JKU back!!!

Another update.

Took her in for the impact sensor recall and they said the shifter assembly recall applied too, so maybe the fix this past fall was with the old parts so they replaced the shifter assembly.

Once again I would swear it feels like a different shifter all over, nice and tight, definitely doesn't bounce around like it used too even yesterday (which was less than before the first replacement).

<shrugs>

So your problem was not related to the recall notice I just got?
