Curious about on road performance?
Hey everyone,
Well lately I've been searching around to purchase my first car and the jeep wrangler struck me as my kind of vehicle.
Although I have no intention of using for off road adventures I'm really curious about how these things usually run on road.
Cheers
William

Welcome! Wranglers handle perfectly well on road, just don't drive it like a sports car & you'll be fine. It did take me a while to become accustomed to driving my wrangler after I bought it but now, I would never own anything other than a wrangler. I DD mine & love every second of it, I think you wouldn't be disappointed if you chose to purchase yourself a wrangler.

Even though it's heavily biased toward off road capability, I love my Jeep as an on-road car as well (and I do a lot of driving). I like the character, the no nonsense feel, the open top. Even if I'm just going to the store, or even on road trips, I prefer to take the Jeep.
[My wife has a sports car which I am welcome to use, but I still take the Jeep]

I love my jeep but I'm not going to sugar coat it a Wrangler is about the most impractical daily driver you can possibly buy. They're cramped, loud, handle like crap, slow, uncomfortable and gets the fuel economy of a 1ton gas powered truck. If the top didn't come off the things nobody in their right mind would drive one.
Having said this I will never not own a jeep. But I'd rather have you get into jeeps with a full knowledge of what to expect (reality) than to get one based on false promises and learn to hate it.
And for the love of all things wrangler please quit calling a jeep a "car"

Mine has been my DD since June of 02 when I bought it new. The 4.0 with a 5sp, 3.73 gears and 31 inch tires has plenty of power and get up and go is good too. Can be fun if your not afraid to rev it up.

The fuel economy of a Jeep wrangle is going to be the same as any other truck, they are not a car, your average car will get anywhere form 27-35mpg. A wrangler gets about 15-16 city, and 17-19 hwy.

The biggest downfall for the Wrangler is it's gas milage. Plain and simple it sucks. Secondly the short wheel base make for a bumpy ride. Not as bad if you are driving, but passangers will hate it. I broke in my '92 Wrangler witha road trip to Daytona Beach for spring break. I felt bad looking over at my passangers trying to sleep and seeing them bouncing around all over the place. TJs (97-06) ride improved with the switch to coil shocks, and I have to say my new JK rides like a luxury car compared to my YJ. Next would be road noise. Depending on your tires and what top you have, holding a conversation in a Wrangler is like trying to talk in a loud night club. That being said, I love my Jeeps.

Fuel economy isnt different between the 4cylinder and 6... i would buy a 6 (if ur on the highway alot for sure get the 6). They are also easy to fix, and have a million parts available. I like working on my in part because its easy to work on.
Just remember ur driving a barn door down the freeway
I will always have a wrangler though. I drive mine DD to work (hour drive 1 way each day) and the best days are when its nice and warm in the morning, and i drive the whole way with no doors / top.

It aint bad man. I DD mine with 3.5 inches of lift and 31s and it does just fine on the highway and around town. I get like 14-15 city and like 19-20 hwy depending on how fast I'm driving. As far as the ride itself, it'll be a little stiff when hitting potholes and crap like that because of the short wheelbase and solid front and rear axles.
Actually, my Jeep rides about as good as my lifted 97 4runner that has IFS.

My 2010 gets better gas mileage than our 97 GMC Sierra 3/4 ton did. I figure if you're getting around 20, you're doing pretty good for what the vehicle does. There are still TONS of cars on the road that get under 20. All of the older toyota celica's that I've owned never got over 15.
I balance it out by getting 50 out of our VW Jetta TDI.

They drive different than a car that's for sure. The short wheel base makes for an interesting ride at times. I know the newer ones that I've rented do drive nice. I just got my first TJ and it's not even driveable yet, but from other's I have driven at times (lifted TJ's), you definately know it's not a car.

i bought my 1st wrangler last summer a YJ after i retired my xj. drove it from salina kansas to mississippi. driving on the interstate it did well with the 4.0 I6and 3sp auto. although i have to push it to 75mph going downhill inorder to maintain a speed of 65-70mph going uphill thats the joy of owning 1. the gas mileage is average the books say 16mpg i say possibly 18 if your easily on the pedal for the 4.0 auto yj i manage to make 200 mile trip on 1 tank of gas. the minute i got behind the wheel i felt how bumpy the ride was expecting to be but once again its unique and adds character its a jeep. when my brother took over and started driving it in little rock to mississppi. i slept like a baby despite the windy ride maybe cause i had to wakeup 4am to start the return trip ha. my conclusion i used my yj as a dd everywk to college no problems with no leaks for a yj! this spring im restoring it otherwords fix the minor rust, repaint it, and bedline the tub. then this summer 4inch lift and tires are coming (my intentions). my saying to you "buy it, built it, enjoy it". my friend was so impress with my yj he even bought one 4 months later and enjoys it too.

I went from a G35 to a Wrangler and would never turn back. There's just a more primal feel to driving it.
That being said, I think a TJ burns gas even if it's turned off .
