The Cost of Jeepin'

Well, I'm new to the forum so Hi Guys!
Im 17, just bought my own 97' Jeep TJ 4.0 and im looking to get it ready for some offroading here in Las Vegas. My jeep is completely stock (with the exception of the bumpers) and I just cant believe how much cash is needed for upgrading in order to go offroading! Can someone give me, maybe a list? Of things i absolutely need to be safe while offroading.

1- other people to wheel with
2- a tow strap

Start easy, build up.

Plenty of common sense and if your not sure, don't do it. Be safe and go slow. Other than that, its all up to you and what you want your jeep to do and what you want it to look like.

Spend a lot of time reading reviews and builds here on JF. Take your time and think it all over so that you only spend money once. There are a lot of options to consider so that you don't later regret your decisions.

However, spend the money before you get a woman, and especially before you knock her up. Oh to be 17 again...

Front lunchbox locker a set of swaybar disconnects and plenty of skids would be a good start.

^^^ I agree with this. If you wheel it (reasonably) you will have a much better idea of what kind of impact your mods have.

Agreed. I've done a LOT with a stock YJ. You can dump a ton of money, or you can spend wisely, but only after you get some experience offroad will you determine what you need.

The stock TJ is an incredibly capable vehicle, far more so than most drivers. It's easy to spend A LOT of money too quickly and then end up having, or wanting to replace and/or upgrade the mods you spent that money on. Research is your friend. JF has a ton of info, so go slow, find some like minded people and learn what you really need and/or want BEFORE you spend the money. That said . . .

A good set of all terrain tires is a good place to start. My general philosophy has been
1. Protect your people (first aid kit, fire extinguisher, navigation and communication equipment and the training to use them)
2. Protect your investment (skid plates, rocker guards, etc. are all cheaper than body work)
3. Upgrades (bigger tires and the lift to run them to their best performance, better axles, better engine etc. the list is endless)

Again, the stock Jeep is incredibly capable. All that's really necessary to have a good time is a healthy dose of common sense and some like minded friends. Everything else is extra.

Cheers,
Adam

A stock jeep with 31" tires can do just as well as a lifted one on 33's. You just need to go out and find what mod's you need for your area. IMO id start with 31" tires and some skid plates as you will be in the rocks.

Also join a local jeep or 4x4 club, That way you can tag along and watch what works and what dont so you can buy correct the first time. That and it helps if you get stuck, Broke etc there will be people more than willing to help and teach you on trail repair. Be safe and good luck
