Can the TJ Pull this?

We have a tent camper, and me and my buddies were planning on a little camping trip and wanted to mix it up a bit and take our camping trailer with us instead of just tents. Now my question is would the TJ be able to pull this? Thats what the trailer looks kind of like, i know the TJs towing capacity is not a lot but im quite unsure.

I remember last time i looked at our trailer i think it was rated at 800-900kg empty i believe.. Im gonna have to double check.

But we were planning on pulling it with my buddies 98 TJ, 4 cyl, 5 speed

Are we looking at problems or what? And it would only be 2 people in the jeep. and some gear

Itll pull it, just take it slow and stay alert. Stopping will be your biggest problem.

What does it weigh...? With a 4cyl it might be a lot of fun if you are going through hilly terrain....

Puliing would prolly be ok. Its stopping that rates most vehicles. Does the trailer have electric brakes? If so, is your vehicle equipped with the elec. brake controller? Otherwise all the braking is on your Jeep brakes and that could be kinda bad in a panic situation. I cannot tell if it has surge brakes or not from the pic.

Obviously yer not gonna break any speed records going up hills but no jeep is.

Again brakes would be my main concern.

No electric brakes on the trailer.. so stopping is up to the jeep

If you can't do that, put the top back on because you're a poser anyway.

Getting up to speed is going to be brutal. Your clutch is definitly not going to like it either. But try it and see what happens. Be sure and let us know how it went when you get back. I've been wanting to do the same thing but I haven't had enough nerve to try. Don't forget to plan ahead for any stopping.

Yah well right now this trip is planned at near end of august LOL, but we just want to start planning ahead and stuff so its far away. But were kind of worried ourselves with the trailer or should we just throw some tents in and go

800-900kg empty translates to 1760-1980 lbs

Found several places online around your year (both before and after) it is 2000lbs (909kg) if trailer has brakes and 1000 lbs (455kg) if the trailer doesn't have brakes. The engine is not the factor ( you will go slower, but it will get it done). It is the brakes and wheel base of the TJ that is the limiting factor.

I pull a trailer that is about 800lbs (364kg) loaded with my YJ and you can really tell it on a quick stop. Your stopping distance is not real good.

What you serious? So technically this trailer is over kill for the braking on the jeep?

What the hell you gonna pull with 455kg... That sucks!

I pull a camp trailer with mine all the time. When I had stock TJ axles/brakes and 35's, it was harder to stop. Now I have 1 ton axles/brakes and it stops on a dime.

This is my setup....

...I have to use two drop hitches to get the tongue level

I'm seeing a lot of 4.0 guys saying no problem but, what about with a little 4-banger? Mine seems to have trouble just getting itself up to speed on the highway...will it be able to do it pulling a trailer? I would love to pull one up to Colorado.

That's true... I more less put in my $.02 because people were talking about stopping being the hard part.
