thanx again for the info. i only have to remove the top once. once it is off i plan to sell it. the wrangler will be used only w/ the soft top. when the really cold weather arrives i have my Grand Cherokee.

after reading these posts i think i'll be on the safe side and ask my neighbor for help.

Geese all this and you just wanted to take it off once and that was it, why didn’t you say so first in the beginning. We were all thinking that you would be doing it (on and off) weather permitting. That is why we were recommending hoists and whatnot. Oh well at least you came to your senses and are getting help.

Even if he was going to keep it, what if he doesn't have a garage? I considered tying a pulley to a tree limb, but I would still need someone help me carry it off of the middle of the yard.

The U.S. Army vaguely envisioned something bigger than a motorcycle, smaller than a truck, and undaunted by the most difficult terrain.

Given that scenario, I typically store my hardtop on a set of kind of customized furniture dollies, so if you had a hoist on a tree, you could just lower it onto the dollies and hopefully wheel it to wherever it was going.

If you are hoisting it, you really need to bring it up a couple of inches above installed location, and then open the tailgate and back the jeep out from under it.

Then lower it down to the dollies.

yes sorry i should have mentioned earlier it was to be a one-time removal.....but looks like it won't be today....the Rubicon I went to look at was sold to a guy who got there 30 minutes before me, it was the 1st day the Rubi was on the lot and it sold 2 minutes after the dealership opened its doors on a Saturday! guess next time i'll have to camp out on the door steps, who knew.

For what it's worth, my hard top goes on and off all the time. Done all by myself each and every time. It really isn't a big deal.

I just slide it back as far as I can, then I get in the back of the jeep and get comfortable, pick it up, and step off the back of the jeep. Once I'm off I just kneel down and set it down.

It's really not too bad but it is a bit awkward and if you aren't too strong you might have some trouble.

I do it alone
I have Garage
4 Motorcycle rachet straps
I use 4ft 2x4 with screw eyes on each end
back into garage lift up rear of top slide 2x4 under rear 1/3 of top
hook tie straps around front hoist up each corner a bit at a time making adjustments to keep it straight.
pull out jeep get on ladder and hoist it to the ceiling...stays there all summer
Can park under the top...

Cheap and effective

I used to remove my LJ top by myself twice a summer. Granted, I had the use of a 2 ton overhead gantry crane to help.

You can do it by yourself easily.

Step 1: Unhook latches and electrical connections
Step 2: Drive FAST!
Step 3: ???
Step 4: pick up pieces and sell for profit!
