busted gas tanks

Who here has damaged there gas tank before howd u do it and what crushed or broke. I am thinking of building my own gas tank skid but am wondering if i may be able to just put a piece of 1/4 alum on the bottom of the stock tank skid???

The problem with the stock skids is that the sides of the tank stick out so if you end up puncturing the tank it's usually the curved part at the edge which makes to be a pain when trying to use a patch kit that is more suited for flat surfaces. At least that's been an experience I've had before. I considered running a skid that surrounds the bottom of the tank but just ended up putting a fuel cell behind the rear seat, one less thing to bang off things.
