Build a fuel efficient jeep
Let's say you were building the most fuel efficient jeep you could for a DD from jeep and aftermarket parts ... can be CJ or Wrangler .... any engine, transmission, tires etc. how would you make it?

i'd run a 4cyl YJ with 28's or smaller. I don't think there is anything more efficient jeepwise... unless you dropped a smaller engine in.

OK, I'll bite.
If money wasn't much of a concern and using available parts: Start with stock YJ, fiberglass body, do a coil conversion to save a few pounds and to make it easier to lower the Jeep, I'm thinking maybe 12" from ground to rockers. Drivetrain would be a 2.2 Ecotec turbo mated to a 6sp tranny, no t-case (RWD only). A comparible diesle could be used as well. High gearing (3.07?) and smaller tires (27"-28" in 15" aluminum rims). Of course, who in the hell would want to drive it?

of course a jeep isnt going to be a incredible mpg vehicle but if I had no limit money wise and were to build a more fuel efficient, yet still very capable jeep i'd start off with a stock base model TJ.
strip everything out of it leaving just the axle's/frame/body and the interior reangle the windshield so its more \ then straight up. highline the front and rear fenders to keep the COG low and add some narrow 33's on lightweight aluminum rims put a small diesel engine mated to a 6 speed manual gearbox and atlas t-case. run the diesel on bio-diesel build a flat skid that goes front to rear of the jeep for better aerodynamic flow.

I would swap to synthetic fluids through out the drivetrain.

Convert it to run off of electric power.

I think it might be possible for a Jeep to be somewhat fuel efficient and still retain some functionality. I would start with a TJ with the 2.4L engine and the 6 speed manual since that engine appears to be more fuel efficient than the 2.5L. You would want the SE version with the soft top and no A/C to keep the weight down. You would want to run the stock size 205/75/15 tire from the old SE with highway tread on lightweight wheels. (You could always buy a set of 31s on other wheels to swap on for off roading or snow). You would want to add nothing in terms of weight. Might want to have some tow hooks to put on if you go off roading. Then do everything you can to improve the resistance levels-change to synthetic diff, trans and transfer case fluids and synthetic oil in the engine. Clean new air filter, new spark plugs and wires. If you wanted to go further you could disconnect and remove the front drive shaft. But, that would cause another inconvenience if you wanted to go off roading.
With the above set up you should be able to get in the 20s fairly easily. Drive a steady 45 mph and you might pull high 20s. |

OR lets say..
since fuel in typical cars is introduced to combustion as a liquid, which causes the engine to only use "some" of this liquid gasoline for combustion, as the rest of the unused fuel goes out through the exhaust and just becomes wasted money. we could infact, turn this liquid into a vapor. Turning gasoline into a vapor would make it more explosive when introduced to the spark plug and in turn make more POWER & SAVE FUEL because one drop of liquid gasoline can create about 5X the power if converted into vapor. id do that. come up with a system that turns gas into vapor and probably get about 40 mpg. and surprisingly..way more hp and torque. and it still looks like a jeep and functions like one.

Fuel vaporisation is a real concept, and the reason why alot of people run mustang fuel injectors in their 4.0 engines. The mustang fuel injectors turn the liquid into a finer mist than the OEM injectors.
