Advice needed...please help

I have the option of buying a 1997 Wrangler 4cyl, 5 speed, with >90,000 miles for $2500. The problem is that the guy I'm buying it from (a co-worker of mine) said the clutch is bad and that's why it isn't running. I don't have any reason not to believe him since I saw him driving it this past fall. Any advice?

One other thing that confuses me about the Jeep is that it has the Sport package (at least that's what it says on the side of the vehicle). Now I'm very new to Jeeps, but I thought that the Sport package came standard with the 4.0, 6 cylinder? Am I wrong? What does the Sport package add to the vehicle?

Thanks again,

Sport = 4.0L engine. Are you sure it has the four cylinder? Decals are cheap and easy to slap on the side of a vehicle but I doubt anyone is going to swap a four cylinder into a TJ that came with a six cylinder. That would be a fair amount of work that would give you a loss in performance.

Even if the clutch is bad the engine should be able to start. It might need to have the battery charged but the engine should start. Give it a try, see what the clutch is actually doing, and then start working on a purchase decision.

Keep in mind that free advice can frequently be worth less than you pay for it.

If it is a 4 cylinder, it has an ax5 transmission, known to be problematic. I would be hesitant if I did not have an extra ax5 around just in case that one is bad.
