2012 JK 2dr opinions

Hi all,

First day on the forum and I'm picking up my 2012 JK 2dr tomorrow!

I'm already thinking about doing some tweaks to it, but I just wanted some personal opinions on mods. What would you do first to one of these newer JK's?? I got it with the upgraded 32" tire package as well as the max tow package and black appearance group. Black on black. It's going to look pretty nice stock but definitely needs more.

So, suggestions? Anything is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance and happy trails!

Wheel it stock...seriously.

First I would do some interior mods or something to make it feel more mine and homey. You could do a lift, tires, bumpers...whatever your wallet allows. But since you payed to have upgraded tires, I'm not sure you'd want to lift it and add tires.

X3...

personally, I would just drive it and let it tell you what mods it needs. Unless you have all of the $$ you need you wont spend it on stuff that you "thought" would work for you but don't. Just a thought. I have changed my mind two or three times on mods I "thought" I need, but after driving for a bit changed either the need or re-ordered the priority of the list. So, it's worth it to just drive it for a bit.

What kind of trail riding are you going to be doing?
What kind of high way riding is your normal?
Is this your DD?
Do you want a suspension lift? a BB (budget boost)? BB are usually really much cheaper and retain the stock suspension parts but increase lift. suspension lifts replace the stock parts, so are normally more expensive and need more parts, etc..

If you are looking to upgrade.. a small lift (2.5"-3") will allow you to go to 33" or maybe in 34" tires) and possibly give you a better ride then the stock suspension does now. But, there may be a cost in MPG with anything you do as well. So RESEARCH.. RESEARCH.. RESEARCH...

If you upgrade tires to .. say 33 or larger you "may" need a new spare tire carrier (weight) especially if you are taking it on the trails often.

If you look around this site, you will find many many excellent builds. Many of them have taken the time to do excellent write-ups and pics to go along with the mods they have done that talk about what they like and don't. And anyone that I have sent PMs to or asked questions in threads have been EXCELLENT resources for what to do and what not to do on any future mods.

I just bought a 12 2dr JK Sport a few months ago and the dealer tossed in a set of the MW3 Black rims and 32" BFG Mud/Terrains. Took it on a short overland jaunt two weekends ago over an old 4 wheeler path. It had NO problem. It's a ridiculous amount of vehicle for the money. Much more capable then my old CJ7.

I don't see any need to lift it or go bigger with tires at all. I man do an axle upgrade in about 10 years, but that's at my leisure. I will be doing off-road bumpers and probably different fenders down the line, but all because I want to. Not because I NEED to.

Unless you are looking to do serious rock crawling or mudding what you are buying will probably give you everything you'll ever need. Enjoy your new Jeep and post some pics!

One thing you can do right off the bat that would help alot off road is front sway disconnects. inexpensive and do alot to smooth out the trail and articulation. One of the lowest cost big gain things you can do.

What do you want to do with it?
Cruise the malls?
Store runs?
City driving?
Highway driving?
Mild off-road?
Extreme off-road?
Mud?
Rocks?
Sand?

Spend time in the JK Forum.

Wow thanks for all the tips guys! Got it yesterday after a longer than expected delivery. I have to say it drives like a dream, definitely the most fun to drive vehicle out there ( that I've driven)

As far as what I intend on doing with it, nothing too intense right away, I would say mild off roading for sure, from what I hear there are some decent trails not too far from where I live in Ontario. Definitely intend on gettin her dirty

I'm thinking of starting with some esthetic mods first and as I learn more about jeeps then I'll dive into the "performance" mods

Just want to say thanks I everyone who commented and gave advice so far, gives me some good stuff to start thinking about as I break her in. This is definitely the best thin I could have stumbled on before getting my jeep!

Thanks again!

Steve
