Thanks for all the feedback. To answer a couple questions above, we're not really near the floods, so I'm not thinking that's an issue.
Both vehicles are 2D and basically stock vehicles.
From doing a little looking in bigger cities, I get the comments that maybe these are high on the price side. However to get really any more inventory, I have to head to Albuquerque.
We'll see what we can get the dealer to do on price on both vehicles and go from there. I am a little time pressed since our current 2nd vehicle is about 15 minutes away from blowing its transmission. Plus, now that I've decided to get a Jeep, I want it in my driveway now.

Just bought an 04 rubi here in Florida for $15,400 with 65 k miles ... Thought I paid too much but it's what I wanted and they don't make them anymore. Many I see are POS ... My advice -if you like it then get it. You'll regret it if you don't... My two cents. Good luck - it's a lifestyle.

I'd definitely splurge for the 03. Nothing wrong with a 2010 Rubi, but I'd rather have the 03. Better engine, better transmission, etc.

Now that you posted the price, I think the TJ is overpriced. That's a Rubicon price.

Don't put so much weight into the mileage of the Jeep. At 5k miles per year a Jeep with about 100k on it will last many years without large issues.

I have a 2010 Rubicon and I absolutely LOVE it, but the engine is a complete piece of ****. I really wish I had gotten the new pentastar

I'd take the 2003 as well but it is way over priced. I bought an 04 rubicon over 3 years ago with 65k miles for $12k (private sale). Granted it was a soft top only and had some pin striping, but it has been an awesome vehicle, with little maintenance. All I've had to replace in the time I've had it are 2 sensors and the starter, and for most of the year it is my daily driver. I've changed out a few other things as well, but by choice

Either way I'm sure you will enjoy your jeep. I'd say the JK is priced more realistically, but I would go for the TJ for the reasons others have stated. Get the price down or maybe expand your range. Sounds like the prices in your area are pretty high. Good luck!

I appreciate all the comments. The KBB value on the '03 for a dealer sale is right at $16.7K. I know that KBB says that if I bought it private party I'd pay between $13.5-15.0K.
We're going to talk with the dealer on price tomorrow, but I'm sure they won't move terribly far off the $16.7K price. Maybe down to $15.5k with a tow package thrown in.
The comments above that say "WAY" overpriced make me a bit nervous. What's "way" overpriced? Any thoughts on a fair range for a car with really no damage / defects, just age?

The reason I say way over priced is because of my personal purchasing experience, and because of what I see available around me. The highest priced TJ I can find in my area is a 2006 rubicon with 21k miles for $18.5k, and even that seems high to me. Most other late model TJs seem to range between $10 and $14k, and these are canadian prices, which I am used to assuming are always higher than US prices. It varies from area to area I guess.

About 1.5 years ago I bought an 02 Sahara 5 speed for a little over $13k. It had roughly 35k miles on the clock and came with dual tops. Bought it from a used car dealer in Ma near Boston, where Wranglers are way overpriced. I'm not sure what state you're from (on my phone), but if the 03 sport was being sold in Ma it would sell for $14k- $15k.

It seems high to me because a jeep like this

http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/cto/4103032517.html

Even with more miles (but still not a lot of miles) has much more value both in parts for much less initial outlay.

I'm guessing the 2003 sport didn't sell for a lot more than they are asking when new, but it's almost 11 years old.

I know Jeep resale is good, but I don't like to pay a premium on anything.

You have to get what you like first and foremost but, I can tell you as much as I loved my old 4.0L in my old LJ I can tell you that if you have a 3.8L that wasn't built in Mexico its a far superior engine. Its queiter, lighter, no flat tappet cam to worry about not to mention much more efficient emission wise and fuel economy. Its also just as dependible think about it how many minivans that used the 3.8L that are heavier than the JK with well over 200k and no major problems at all? We all know the minivan don't get the best treatment either. Not saying its the best engine in the world but, compared to the 4.0L it is. The only place the 4.0L will outshine is off idle around 800 rpm to 1500 then the 3.8L takes over and has a much more usable power band being it don't have a 35ft crankshaft on it lol. The TJ compared to the JK there's no comparison even 2dr vs 2dr. When you talk JKU its Jupiter vs Earth. Honestly if your looking to have the Jeep as a daily driver and to use as a family vehicle I would hold out for a stock JKU but thats just me. In any case take you're time and don't rush there are millions of Jeeps out there.

Yea, so many prefer the 3.8 to the 4.0.... All I hear about the 3.8 is how much oil it burns and lacks torque. Stick with the 4.0. If you need to have a JK, move up to the 3.6.

If you move to a JK get the 3.8L its more proven than the 3.6 is. Not taking anything away from it but, they are even 14s still having head problems. I remember hearing it was only early 12s then it was some late 12s then it was some early 13s then it became late 13 and early 14 are fine. Go figure lol. It might be a great engine one day but, I think Chrysler rushed it to fast and tried to get to much power out without thinking about reliability first. Honestly the 3.8L is fine unless your pushing 33 inch plus tires which at that point you re gear and off you go.
