YJ vs. TJ

OK so this may be a loaded question, but that's ok. I'm not new to jeeps but the newest one I've ever owned/worked on was a 92 YJ. I'm in the planning stages of purchasing my next jeep hopefully by spring or early summer next year. I'm thinking I want to go ahead and go for the TJ, but YJ's are a little easier to come by at a good price. But then again, which one is cheaper to lift in order to clear 32's or 33's....which is what my ultimate goal will be.

Either way it's gotta be the 4.0 with a manual tranny.....go ahead and hit me with some pro's and con's guys...I'm looking for lots of opinions and fact to help aid me in my final decision!

YJs cheaper to lift, but not as much aftermarket support, square headlights, older, more things that will go out due to age, leaf springs, arguably the cheapest trail only rig.

TJ, little bit more expensive to lift, lots of aftermarket support, round headlights, very well built, less things to go bad just due to not as old, coil springs for a nicer ride, nicer interior, arguably the best wrangler ever made.

I really liked my YJ but I needed 4 doors so having to trade up. You will find a YJ cheaper so you have more money to spend on MODS so for me it was a no brainier.

And yes the square vs round headlights debate. I like square lights so no big deal to me.

Rogue talkin about headlights as if it is a given negative? Cmon Rogue. I agree with rogue except the headlight comments. If you are driving a nice rig with square headlights, i mean a nice rig....people notice. TJ ride a lot nicer, but I like the rough ride and primitiveness of a YJ. Good Luck

I feel like the leafs would get in the way of approach angles... and seems like tjs could flex more.. I am more of a cj/tj guy, so obviously i am biased. I would rock a lcg yj, or a jurassic park yj lol

YJ's are definately cheaper to lift than a TJ, but stay away from the cheap, saggy spring lifts sold by Rough Country!!!!!

I'd say, but I'm not truely sure, the YJ's are more troublesome than the TJ's. But I have never owned a TJ, so I'm just going by what my friends have.

If you want something that has a better ride, get a TJ. I myself, like the (old school leaf spring design) and it is a rough ride at first, if you are new to the YJ, but I have got used to it, and I like it.

I like the old stuff, and you can easily work on it, and fix it too, not like the newer compuckter, sensers out the ying yang (< pun intended) controlled junk.

Well, thats my opinion on this matter. Now ya just got to choose what pain in the *** Jeep you want.

Just go find a TJ that is for sale and take it for a test drive. Your mind will be made up after about 10 seconds. This will really ring true if you have to drive it every day. I never really knew just how spoiled I was until I drove a YJ the other day. I sure am glad that I went the extra $$$$ and bought a TJ.

As far as lifting goes???? Shop around. I gave $25 for a pair of V8 ZJ front coils, $20 for some 1" spacers for the front to level it out, $5 for longer bolts and flat washers to drop the X-fer case, and $17 each for new shocks, for a grand total of...... $118 for a 3" lift. I flog the crap out of this setup every other weekend with no problems at all and it still rides and drives great on the highway.

if you have obd2 inspection dont bother with anything newer than 95.

it really depends on the wheeling you are going to do.

Mud = yj, rocks = tj
