YJ, TJ 4 Cylinder, disappointing?
I'm still doing my patient search for a yj or tj for
weekend fun and occasional daily driving. Gas mpg is NOT an issue. I prefer a 6 cyl auto, but if I run across the "right" vehicle with a 4 cyl will I be dissapointed? I've test driven 1 TJ with a 4 cyl auto, 50000 miles, but it was such a slug. I don't know if something was wrong with it or its just that way? I mean it seemed like it was dragging weights behind it. The 6cyl auto I test drove seemed good and responsive. I am leaning towards an auto in case my wife wants to drive it, she is freaky about using a clutch. Maybe I should test drive another 4 cyl just to compare. Are there any notorious areas I should look at for oil or fluid leaks on these engines, 4 and 6 ? Any common mechanical things I should look for with the TJ or YJ before i buy? Any comments?

I am selling mine because of the 4 (well that is one reason) It is awful. I would get stick then she could not drive it
that is what me and my dad did. look for cracked exhaust manifolds.

![]() Cracked manifolds onthe 4 or 6 cyl? Any particular area of the manifold? I would assume that a cracked exhaust manifold might make a noticable sound? Thanks for the info. |

I have a 4cyl YJ and no dissapointments. You don't need to go fast anyways in a jeep. Your not trying to win a race. I would love to have the 6 cyl though for pulling hills. That's my only dislike of the 4cyl. I would also go with a 5 spd with whatever you choose. Better gas mileage, easier to rebuild if need be.

I don't want to win a race, but damn, it felt like it was pulling another vehicle behind it, gutless!
It felt like my 80's chevy cavalier all over again. |

i've had both... You'll regret the 4 cyl!!! I love the responsiveness and torque the 6 cyl has. There is a reason that the inline six has been around for so long and in so many types of jeeps.
I also would get a stick... I don't like automatics, and stick shift is better for off roading (engine braking, clutch usage, ect) but this is just one man's opinion. Ask the same question in the TJ Technical forum (or whatever model you are shopping for) see what they say- theres alot of GREAT advice to be had there.
