Well, i had a 89 dodge ramcharger that im looking to trade. Im 16, and love offroading and consider myself a decent mechanic. Ive done engine swaps, tranny swaps everything basically and im looking for a project jeep that will double as my commuter until i get a small car.I got an offer for a 84 2 door cherokee. It has the 2.8 v6 and a 5 speed.fairly high milage, about 150,000 Yuck right?yes but here comes the good part, it has a air locker in the front end, 4 88 gears, a Rustys Offroad 4.5 inch lift, DONE RIGHT, no blocks or spacers, tube bumpers, on board air. The jeep runs and drives fine, however the driveshaft is unbalanced and makes some racket at about 65. The interior is gone, seats and dash is all thats there. Not a problem really since im going to bed liner it anyways. Do you think that i should go for it even though it has the undesirable motor? Or wait for a 4.0? I really want to but i havent heard much on the v-6s. Fuel economy is also a big factor these days. What do you guys think? I need some specialists opinions =)
please wait for a 4.0, those v6's are loads of garbage. Even though it is "done right" it is still worth the wait. preferably get a stock jeep and fix it up yourself so that you can mod it the way you like.
the engine compartment is different with the v6's because the block isnt as long, there would have to be EXTENSIVE firewall modding along with many other things. FAR too much work as far as im concerned.
I understand. Know anything about the 3.4 swaps? There the same motor i hear just bored and stroked. That was going to be my option if the 2.8 went out.
personally i dont know that much about it but i do know that it is a common swap for that motor.
