XJ: Best year?

Looking at opinions for what the best year XJ is and why. I'm trying to stay under $4k and want something as a fun DD.

91-99, All those years have good reliability.

97+ has the updated body and a nicer interior.

99 is considered "best" by some but there aren't any huge differences (especially compared to 98s).

00-01 suffer from the 0331 head issue (known to crack if overheated).

97-99, as they are the newest available without the 0331 head, and they have a HP front axle, where 00-01 had a LP. You should be able to find a fairly clean 97-99 in that price range.

Right on. Motor wise should I aim for the 4.0 or the v8?

There wasn't a V8 available in the XJ. Are you thinking of the Grand Cherokees?

Gotcha. I got the two confused. Waiting to sell my current truck and find a nice XJ.
