Martin that's unreal, I've got several grand into my swap already and i'm not even done. I'd say unless you're a guru like yourself it would be tough to do it that cheap.
For instance: $1200 for engine and tranny
$500 tranny to transfer adapter
$800 wire harness
$500 new drivelines
$200 tranny shifter
$260 in tank fuel pump(california smog sensors in the pump itself)
$300 exhast
$300 to have the computer flashed
and trust me lots more... plus i'm in california so smog crap galore

The fact that you were able to do it for 1600 makes me nauseus. Oh and it's been 2 years too! haha
Well done Martin, well done indeed. I'm going to be ringing in at about 5K when i'm done. But it's going to be worth every penny and every busted knuckle!

Sorry to hear about that amount of money!
I bought the whole rig (91 s10 blazer) for $800. Did not use a single adapter (231c front to 231j rear). Had Novak motor mounts and a cheapo B&M shifter for the 700r4.
Used a new stock S10 fuel pump in the tank, and so on.
Also sold the 2.5/ax5 for a few hundred too.
I am doing another for a friend of mine who has scored some very good deals....Painless Performance harness, $200 shipped and so on.

just saw where you are, I went from Sacramento to Mt Vernon Wa over last weekend, I could have lent a hand for a day! Hell I stopped in Corning and got fuel and a shower before going into Or.

It's a small world! Man that would have been awesome. I'm pretty close now though, hopefully within the next week or so the jeep will be on the road again. Painless doesn't do a harness for the 2000 4.3 and it took a while to find a company that did. Street and Performance put one together for me if anyone is in the same boat.

well youre probably better off just buying another jeep like other posters have said. but the reliability of the 4 cyl is not to be underestimated. my dad's 93 4 cyl has 300k on it and has survived 2 transmissions. properly taken care of its very reliable

2 points to remember here bud.
1) no one ever questioned the 2.5 so far as being reliable, just under powered.
2) saying a motor outlasted a ax5 is by no means a compliment to the motor! AX5's drop like flies. Now if the 4 banger outlasted a nv4500 etc, then it would be brag worthy.
