Even if you could fit 33s without a lift (which I doubt you can), the tires are what are going to create a power problem no matter how much lift you have. You can make the 4 cyl get the job done, but again, given the choice upfront I'd go for the 6.

I had a 4 cylinder YJ before, and it was acceptable. It was slow, and the mileage wasn't good. When I went to buy another one, I was going to get another 4, as they are usually cheaper, but I found a deal on a 6 and I went for it. I'm glad I did, and after driving this one, I could never drive another 4 cylinder again. With the 4 cylinder, it struggled a lot on the freeway, you couldn't use 5th gear hardly ever. Now, with my 6, I can go down the freeway at 110kmh in 5th gear while towing my boat or my tent trailer, and this is with 31" tires too. I would never have wanted to tow anything on the freeway with my old YJ. Oh, and fuel mileage is almost the same.

I've a 95 4cyl with 5-speed and i've never had a problem with it-on highway or not. I use 5th gear all the time, and the only time i've had to downshift is in the mountains on I-70 in WV. I recently put a Cherry Bomb Glasspack on and it seems to have opened up a little bit of horsepower in the higher rpms. I'd still have gone with a 6 if i got another one, but like most other people here, i got a decent deal and was in dire need of a car, so i jumped on it. Also, i don't know if this is true of all 4 bangers, but mine came with a 8.25 rear axel, which is i guess a little stronger than the d35.

I have a 95YJ 4cy I drive on weekends around town mostly and the 4 will do everything I ask it. But I am hoping to sell mine and buy a XJ 6cyl for more power and two more doors.
The price of the 4 are very nice and well worth the cash so hard to beat one. |
