New to YJ

Im about to buy a 1993 YJ with the 4.0 and an automatic unfortunately.
It has 188,000 ( doesnt worry me too much my ZJ has 238,000 and runs great)
But what are some things I should be looking out for before I buy it? The body has some rust (wisconsin vehicle) but the frame is solid. I believe its a sahara (repainted so the stickers aren't on). Im getting it for under $1,500 and it runs and drives well as far as I can tell. Power steering isn't working too well. Worth it? Whats should I look for before buying? Thank you!

double check the frame...especially around the spring eyes and where the power steering pump mounts to the frame. If it has carpeting, make sure that you lift that up and look at the floorboards. For that price if it runs and the frame isn't rotted out, you've got a good start.

$1,500 is a steal where I am from with the 4.0 as even if it is a rust bucket.

X2 on the frame!
I got mine for $2K two years ago and thought that was a steal.
Nice find.

Since you've got a Jeep, you know a lot of the basics to look for in the powertrain department. They're surprisingly similar. I can go from my son's ZJ to my YJ and back again with little effort, mechanically.

Obviously the frame and body are crucial things to look at. Once the cancer starts, it's a nightmare to stop. Wranglers are notoriously more abused than Grand Cherokees. I'd be looking for evidence of neglectful off roading, under carriage damage and original seals on differential covers, transmission, etc. If you do pick it up, personally I'd go through all the fluids within the first month. I'm on my second YJ and neither had a lick of drivetrain work done to them - no fluid changes, nothing.

$1,500 is a great price, if she runs clean. Good luck!

Sounds like a deal to me. My only advice is to get a picture of the Previous Owner for your dart board later once you own it.

Fresh stock suspension is 31s. Old stock is 30s without rubbing. Remove the track bars and most old leafs will allow 31s.
