Need some Jeep buying tips

I am very new to the forum and am looking for a wrangler. I hope you guys can help me out, I am looking at some late 90s or early 2000s model TJs. Id like a 5 speed and id probably want to throw some 31 or 32 on it. Do you think its possible to get around 19-20 mpg highway and 16-18 in town with this combination. If this is possible would i need to look for a 2.5 or a 4.0? Im just wanting to get some of this figured out before I buy because I need something with somewhat decent mileage. I drive an 1982 Chevrolet 350 right now and 10.8 mpg is killing me!!

It is possible on either of those. Go 31" and no bigger without a lift. Those MPG's won't be that far off.

31at's maybe. 31" MT/Rs got me 17mpg on the jeep you describe. 33s dropped to 15.

That's highway.

Every jeep is different. Don't buy a jeep with intentions of getting good MPG. It should be better than the 10.8 you are currently getting though.

Bought a '97 TJ Sport 4.0 last spring and have been tracking my gas mileage pretty regularly. Its all stock with 3.07 gears and P235/75R15 A/T tires (almost 29 inches) and I'm consistently getting just under 16 city and my best highway road trip mileage this summer was around 20.5. This is my first Wrangler and the thing that caught me off guard a little is that 5th gear is a true overdrive. So it helps the mileage but I'm constantly needing to downshift on the highway for even the slightest hills. I'm getting used to it now but it took a while.

So do yall think I need to try finding a jeep with a 4.0 to find that kind of mileage with 31s? or go with the 2.5?

I don't think you'll get much more, if any better mileage with a 2.5. And you'll be less happy.

Mileage just isn't a strong point for these.

Mileage between the 4.0 and 2.5 are minimal. 1-2 MPG at most. You will be more happy with the 4.0.
