I am looking to buy a jeep but need opinions on if its a good deal with the few issues it has. Its a 1988 Wrangler 4cyl, 4x4 with 166k miles. Exterior looks real clean, no rust and tires good. It has 35s.
The AC does not work and interior could use a little work. The CD player in dash did not power on but was told it was supposed to work, so not sure there.
The biggest concern I had was when driving the gas needle was popping between 3/4 full and half. It didnt appear to be measuring right.
I know being a jeep and this old its going to have some issues, but I dont want to be buying a huge problem money pit.
If it were me, I'd probably be a buyer. I'm really good with mechanical stuff and not so good with cosmetic stuff, that one looks pretty clean for the $$. But if you're going to pay someone to fix everything, no YJ or TJ is going to be a smart buy. I'm assuming with 35s and a 4 cyl that it's been regeared?
There's really no way for anyone on this forum to give you any reliable advice on whether or not you should buy that Jeep, especially that old and with that mileage. If you're concerned about about anything mechanical, like any other vehicle, you should probably just have a reputable shop take a look at it for any issues. Regardless of how mechanical you may or may not be, you will almost certainly have to invest money and labor into it on a fairly regularly basis. With a YJ or TJ of that age and mileage, you should be prepared to become very familiar with how to make repairs to it.
I'd buy it too. It would however be a play vehicle for me. We have a 91 YJ. I bought it primarily because it's a southern rust free jeep. Mechanically I have had to do a lot to it. The gas gauge was one of them. You'll have to pull the tank and replace the tank unit. A radio that wont power on is not something I'd be too concerned about. Working or not you won't be able to hear it anyway when your going down the road.
If you can fix things you'll be good with the purchase. Keep looking too there's always a better deal out there. I just bought a 2001 TJ for $1000. It needs everything including a frame.
