In the market

I'm beginning the slow process of looking to get into a Jeep. I'm starting to squirrel away some cash and am planning to buy in or around May 2014.

A cursory glance at what's available out there for my anticipated $5000 - $6000 budget appears to be several Jeep Cherokee's and few Jeep Wranglers between the years of 1998 and 2008. I'm figuring something between 100k and 150k miles. Although, I'd prefer a Wrangler personally, I'm partial to the Cherokee because this will be both my daily & weekend driver, and I have a rather large family with lots of stuff to haul around. Our primary family hauler will still be the van.

Anyway, I'm looking for something stock, though eventually, I'd like something I can slowly make more rugged (susp. lift, lockers, tires, axles, etc...). Nothing obscene as it'll remain my commuter vehicle for the foreseeable future.

While I'm looking around for the deal of the century, what things should I be looking at? Are there common problems with these vehicles to watch out for? I'd like to avoid purchasing an Engine/Transmission/Electrical nightmare. Any trim packages that tend to cause more hassle than they're worth?

Thanks in advance.

Jason
