Manual vs Automatic?
I'm in the market to pick up a '00ish Cherokee and have heard alot of different things about the transmissions in them. Due to cost I'll probably just be getting a basic Sport model. I've driven standard all my life and prefer that, but I've heard the stick's in the cherokee are weak. I'm looking to pick one up as a daily driver, but also throw a winch and mudders on it to go blazin a trail. So to you guy's with personal experience,.. What'd you recommend to pick up and Why? For both daily drivin and off roading I'd still prefer a Stick, but some guy's that have had each said sometimes the manual trannys felt like they were weak and could bust off road, but that their Auto's felt bulletproof with an upgraded cooler. Thanks for the insight.

If you are going to be doing water crossings/deep mud/rocks I would get an auto and relocate the breather tube. I am scared to shift my manual underwater after learning that water and other **** can get inbetween the clutch and pressure plate and screw things up.

This has been covered a lot try searching for it. I have driven both, general consensus is it is going to be used a lot off road especially rocks and trails the automatic is far better than a stick, as far as a stick being weak, I don't think it is, depending on year. Sticks are fun, but serious off roaders use automatics, for a few reasons.
1. only two pedals in an auto, were with a manual you have 3, I don't have 3 feet maybe you do. ![]() 2. Automatics have a torque converter which outputs 2-3 times more torque, than a manual clutch can. 3. Autos can stop and start at any angle with no fear of back rolling or trying to work 3 pedals. 4. I have seen heavily modified jeeps with stick and a good driver, struggle over something a novice can do with an auto. If you can find one with an AW4 automatic that would be ideal, they only made Cherokees (XJs) until 01.
