i got a 3 inch bds lift with 33" toyos and 4.10 gears. it needs new gears, but i probably could have stuffed 35's under it with the lift.

Just started looking.Coming across a lot of 4 cyl at a good price. The 4.0 seems to be made of gold or something. I would like to put a 6-8 inch lift with 36's or even 38's.

It's funny how the first thing out of a lot of people's mouths is "go buy a 4.0..."

It's your jeep, go as big as you want, 4 cyl or not. Just remember that you'll have to regear, and get used to the right lane on the highway.

I drive a 4 cyl, and after having several 4.0l jeeps, I don't mind it. I mean, sure, you have to be heavy on the throttle sometimes, but it gets the job done.

Biggest I saw was a YJ 2.5 running 37 TSL's on Wagoneer Dana 44's with 5.13 gearing.

When you get above 35s you have to start changing axles out which if this is a trail only rig a 4cyl could be do able with steep gears and large tires, if this is your DD the biggest I would go with a 4cyl is 31s and 33s with a regear to 4.88. Also once you go to 35s or larger you should start looking at other things like steering upgrades and brakes. If you have choice I would get the I6, beyond the better motor you might also get one with a rear D44.

because we speak from experience and have driven 4cyl's... i see you like yours and that's great but typically people falling in love with their 4cyl's is far and few between. to each his own, but we are just trying to be helpful because a few of us have made the mistake

I havent even lifted my 2.5L yet and I'm suffering with 31's. I drive 30 minutes on the highway to get to work durring rush hour. Maybe that has something to do with it. lol

The 4.0 is a great motor, but if you realy fee like modding your 4 cylinder, go for it. It will have all the power you need off-road.

Tire size really does'nt matter as long as you change the gears. Back in the day a buddy of mine had a four cylinder with 18/39 Mickey Thompson's on his truck with 5:13 gears. I ran like it had stock tires on it. We did'nt do any off roading with it though, he and I were in to the show truck scene. On raod at highway speeds,it did fine. It tach'd around 3,000 with stock tires on it,so keep that in mind as well. Just my 2 cents worth.
