Liberty vs Grand Cherokee Diesel

I live in Denver and just recently purchased a vintage camper that weighs unloaded 2200 lbs. My V6 3.0 Mazda Tribute is only able to do 30 mhp on some of the step sections of I-70. I really would like to get a diesel vehicle. The diesel Liberty has a smaller engine than my Mazda but the diesel gives a lot much towing capacity, but will it be enough to pull this over Colorado passes at a resonable speed? I'm sure the diesel grand cherokee(2007,2008) can do it, but they are considerably more expensive. I'm hoping to test drive a Liberty with the camper but that might be tough to do. Any advice?
