My wife was pretty light on the accelerator and she only got 18MPG overall with the 4.7L Commander. She could get 19s on flat highway, but that thing didn't hit 20 unless we were going with the wind downhill. When we lemoned it (don't buy an 06 with sunroof, trust me), we got a 3.7L Commander. She can get about 22MPG on flat highway with it but her overall mileage hasn't changed so I guess she's getting a bit worse city mileage.
As far as handling, it's a Jeep. But it's a really smooth Jeep. I wouldn't race people in it, but the steering is tight and the road noise is almost non-existent. Visibility takes getting used to. And like any Jeep, turn radius is fantastic for its size. I don't regret owning one at all.
I'd test drive the 3.7L and the 4.7L. I was amazed how well the V-6 did, especially mated to that fancy pants Mercedes transmission. I actually like the way the 3.7L drives better than the 4.7L. But when towing my boat, I miss the V8. I just mention that about the 3.7L because dealerships are usually stuck with them and will give you a lot better deal on one. I walked away with a V6 Sport with leather, sunroof, and just about every other option you can get in a Sport for less that they were willing to give me on an extremely stripped down 4.7L. That might not be the case anymore.
