Help with a Wagoneer

I am looking at a 1986 Wagoneer and everything looks good other than an oil leak and what looks like a missing cover to something behind the engine underneath. I am no mechanic so I am not sure what it is but it has bolts for a cover but its missing and I can see a gear. It is directly behind the oil pan and I need help figuring out what it is or supposed to be. Also is the oil leak fixable or does it just depend. Please help!!!
