looking at a 97 tomorro for my son . i've got some schooling but not enough jeep knowledge to be sure on something . the guy has his front shaft disconnected (i have yet to see jeep ) he says he was told it needs front ring and pinion . from what i've read ,the front ring and pinion turns regardless of shaft . this is what's puzzling ,if it were the ring gear or pinion , wouldn't it still be an issue with shaft disconnected ? he says it was chattering when shaft was connected . jeep is very clean in close ups so i'd like to pursue it . my thinking is it's a transfer case issue maybe . any thoughts?

Well, seeing as you never said what model of '97, I cant really help!
If he swapped the axles though, it may have 2 different ratio's in the front and rear.
List the model and as much info as possible and then we can guess for you.

it's a 97 4cyl. standard . believe it's a 5 spd. he's second owner. what would cause you to pull the front shaft on a tj?

Ahhhh ok, its a 4 banger TJ!!
Now we all know the model.
Only reason I can think of that isnt too bad is that he swapped axles, and the new one has a different ratio than the old one.

see he said when it was put into 4wd it would chatter . is it possible the ring and pinion are bad but only noticeable when under load?

Agreed, that if the r&p were trashed, it would make a noise regardless of the transfer case connection. On a disconnect axle (YJ's etc) it would not turn with the wheels, on a tj axle though, which is solid shafts either side, it would turn the r&p whenever the wheels are turning.
Does not make sense to me to disconnect the front shaft.
Unless it is a steal, I would pass and try for a 4.0 instead of the 4 banger, been there and done it. If everything worked flawlessly and it was in excellent shape, then maybe a 4 banger would be worth it.
It is your call, but something sounds fishy to me.....

Here we are going in a different direction....
4wd will "chatter" on dry road when turning! It is meant to be used on "loose surfaces" where traction is not good.
So what exactly was he doing when it was "chattering"??
That is the question to ask...It may be fine, it may be a bad transfer case etc.

Try to at least get the front drive shaft on it and see for yourself.
Hell, it could be a bad u joint in the shaft for all we know!
Go look and then post up the results of your find.
Be sure to put the transfer case in all ranges though, and check for the front output spinning.
