I have found one more. I don't think I will be able to convince my wife to spend this much money right now but this seems like a near perfect jeep. Let me know what you all think.

Is it possible to find a Jeep with everything you all say I should look for, for less than $4000?

4.0L I6
Stock
Hard top and doors
Good body and frame
Etc.

It said that the listing had been deleted or something on Ebay.

4.0L = Highly recommended
Stock = Ehh, NEAR stock - I emphasized this after that huge green beast on tiny wheels we saw. A few mods/2-3" lift is alright (I wouldn't buy it, but for a first timer, that's still very manageable)
Hard top and doors = I like soft tops. Sooooo, the hard top is on the bottom of the list as far as I'm concerned. However, if there's NO top or doors with the Jeep, such as the one before, that drops the value of the Jeep considerably.
Good body and frame = Kinda obvious? HOWEVER, for instance, I just found a 98 TJ with 80000 miles on it for $4000 in my area. The secret? It's been in two wrecks, and has body damage - however, me being a thrifty one, I actually moreso enjoy driving a beat up Jeep as opposed to an immaculate one. My point=it all depends on your tastes and style. Most important, though = straight frame. I was sure to check the frame on that 98 VERY well. Sometimes you can find an outstanding deal if you're willing to drive with a little show of character on the Jeep

For some reason the link is not working no matter what. I tried a couple of times. The Jeep is definitely still on Ebay though. I feel good about it. Thank you again for all of the help. Now to convince the wife.

So I am still looking for a Jeep. I think, after reading several posts on here, that I would be fine with an Automatic. What do you all think about this one?

92 jeep wrangler 6 cyl auto

Also what other considerations are there with an automatic and running oversized tires or axle swaps and stuff like that? Is a lot of that regulated through a computer module or would there be a lot of re-gearing considerations?

Looks like a decent one and if she really has babied it then it would be worth the extra few hundred she asking. Having gone the route of getting a Wrangler with soft top and half doors and wanting a hard top and full doors after I deffinately think its better to get them to start with if you can so that one has that as a plus. The mileage is in that could go either way range. If its been well taken care of the mileage isnt too high, but if its been abused the mileage is a concern. Either way if it were me I'd figure within two years it might be due for a rebuild. Then again it is a 4.0 and some of them are still going at 300k plus miles.

Unless your ready to pull the trigger and build a dedicated trail rig, dont worry about regearing for now. With a budget lift you can run 31"s just fine and take it most places you might want to go. It's going to be your first Jeep, enjoy it for a while and then after you've gotten a hands on education about Wrangler's you can dive into building a monster if you want to. And no regearig the axle wouldnt require anything beyond regearing the axle. Most people would toss in heavier U-joints and maybe a better drive shaft, but your a long ways from that discussion.

I went and drove that Jeep last night. It drove and sounded pretty good. There was a slight rumble from the rear axle which worries me a bit. It sounded like a slight grind and was very consistent with the Jeep's speed. Should this worry me? I also learned that it is the sahara edition. When I KBB.com the value it states that in good condition the private party would only $3800. Does KBB just not know the Jeep market or is this guy crazy?

What would a decent starting offer be?
