Dont want to get in over my head...

Hey guys,

I am looking to buy a Jeep for my senior project. I found a 1994 Cherokee for a great price not too far from me.

$500 for a 4.0, 5 speed, 4x4, 171k mile Cherokee. This is what the seller had to say about it...

"needs a fuel pump"

and then I emailed her...

"The body has very little rust on it. And yes it is probably gonna need to be towed away. I had someone check it out again today, he thinks it may be something simple with the carburetor. So not sure. Could be a simple fix."

The last part is where I am having trouble... "could be." I dont want to spend 500 bucks on a Jeep that is going to need 1000 in motor work.

So Jeep Forum... do you think it is likely that the Cherokee will empty my wallet?

Edit:

I realize that nobody can diagnose a car accurately without actually seeing it...

I guess I am asking if you guys would buy it...

I would say get them down to $250 then at least you could part it out and get your money back. Cherokees don't have carburators, so that won't be the problem, I would get it and if it costs too much to fix, then part it out and buy something else.

Well hell, take your lazy butt over there with 500 in cash and some tools. Pay a fair price AFTER you look at it.

Oh... and look UNDER IT for rust... some body rust may well mean fatal cancer of the frame and underside.

I will say this, though: I've bought a number of "200 dollar" "500 dollar" and 'Thousand dollar" vehicles over the years. Oddly enough, they all cost me about 2 grand each by the time they were roadworthy.

I looked at one just like that about a year ago. It ran well, the TC shifted fine, and "looked" okay, however I figured it would need some work. I would bet the same thing on this one and may be a project Jeep for you.
