Cherokee prices
How much are 98-01 Cherokees going for in your area? I'm in the Chicago area and almost every one I look at is waaay over book price. I offered a dealer $3750 for a '99 sport with 120k miles and he laughed at me. He said he couldn't let it go for less than $5500. Almost all the ones I see are close to $6,000 or over if they have less than 150k miles. Is it just my area or what?

All the Hope and Change in Washington DC has removed a vast number of prime quality used vehicles from the marketplace and has sent them to the junkyards to be mashed into little cubes. Scarcity of product equals higher prices.
Try kbb.com for prices.

I got both of mine for 4100 and 5500 less than a year ago. with 110K and 60k. Right now I am helping a friend look for cars and I saw an XJ Classic for 6900 with 70k. Not to many XJ's floating around since the great XJ/ZJ massacre of 09 |

I hear ya on the scarcity thing, maybe that's the problem. I did check KBB, and the private party price for good condition was $2610. I basically added over $1000 to that price for the dealer profit, overhead, etc. Suggested retail value was $4435. And call me crazy, but I'm not paying retail value, categorized as "excellent" condition, for a vehicle that is over 10 years old.

Here's an excerpt from my thread in this forum. I'm looking for XJ's and these are the two that pique my interest:
The '99 XJ Sport is listed through a dealership and is $2700 and has 169,000 miles. The '98 XJ Limited is listed through Craigslist and is $3200/obo with 118,000 miles.

I wouldn't overpay either. You could always go the backyard XJ route. Then do a build/resto thread and everyone will be on your side.

KBB.com may a little behind on updating their prices. I have noticed that local XJ prices are up. Still, you can often find a mis-priced XJ on CraigsList. One of the local dealerships had a nice low miles 99 under priced by about $1800. You can find private sellers that have underestimated the market demand and are selling for a great price. Just be ready to move quickly.
